Notes
B&w. Outdoors. Group of men, women, and children sitting and standing in front of a house, in front of the children on the right is a decorative table cloth on a table. The men are wearing suits with ties, and the women are wearing dresses. Benjamin Garfinkel is sitting at the table on the left side; his wife is sitting next to him. Narrative: This photograph was taken on the occasion of a family gathering to celebrate the imminent departure of Benjamin Garfinkel (born July 18, 1894 in Podolsk, Russia) and his wife Ita (born circa 1900) to North America. The photograph was taken at the house of an aunt named Sourka. She is probably the one who booked the photographer for the occasion. Benjamin and Ita Garfinkel were the last ones to immigrate out of Europe. Ita's family had immigrated to Montreal already, mostly because of the pogroms that took place in their region. They left Ukraine on August 28, 1926 via Moscow, St. Petersburg (probably) and took the SS Murdoch from Southampton, UK to Canada (probably Québec city or Halifax). Ita was pregnant at the time of their trip; she had her fourth child in Canada. Family members who stayed in Ukraine were all killed during the Holocaust.
