- Number of tapes: 2 Duration: tape 1- 44:40 tape 2- 29:44 *Disclaimer* contains sensitive content and terminology Tape 1 Audio begins mid conversation Dave recalls how he joined the army September 11, 1939. Dr. Major Sam Mirsky recruited Dave in the medical corps, because he was a pharmacist. No 5. Casualty Clearing station; compares it to the show MASH. They would receive the wounded from the field, the surgeons would perform operations and once they could be moved they would go to a general hospital Dave was a sergeant for 6 years. Upon enlistment he was sent to England for 2 ½ years. He was told he was being sent to North Ireland, but they actually ended up in Augusta Sicily in September 1943. His wife was 3 months pregnant at the time. They were raided by the German air force near arrival, and 2 ships were lost. They sent Dave to the British 8th Army to train Recalls the danger, and discusses his experiences moving around as a medic. Recalls a specific story of a bombing at a dance he was going to attend. Recalls a specific story of special treatment from a higher up in the army. Recalls some anti-semitism in higher ups in the army. His wife Lote Langstadt was from Nuremberg. She had a sister and 2 brothers. Henry was the oldest boy. Lote went to get a passport and they forgot to stamp it with a J, so she got out of Nuremberg in 1983. Her parents and siblings were sponsored in July 1939 to get to England. Dave went to shul in London with Dr. Mirsky and after dinner they went to the house in London for Canadian Jewish Boys run by Ms. Elton, who was head of B’nai Brith and Lote worked there as a hostess, and that is where Dave and his wife met. Lote Langstadt and Dave married November 18, 1942 in England. Getting married was difficult because they did not have a lot of money. He left Italy in March of 1945, went up through Belgium and Holland until August 1945. Dave explains how he was not part of liberating the camps. He went to find a couple who were hiding in Holland, because their daughter was friends with his wife. Recalls helping other families who were hiding. Dave’s brother Saul was in the army in the States, as he had been working as a furrier in the States. Dave’s family had furriers and pharmacists. Dave recalls hearing rumours about the Holocaust when he was near the German border. Members of Lote’s family died in the Holocaust. In Kristallnacht, her house was wrecked. When he returned to Canada after the war, Lote didn’t arrive until March 1946. They have 3 kids; Helen, Johnny, Louis. Dave’s youngest son Morris died in 1970 at age 17 from a brain tumor. Johnny is a Doctor and Louis is a professor. Dave and Lote have 8 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren Dave’s brother had bought 4 houses on Bresser St. and they lived there until 1952, before moving to Nice Bridge Rd. He returned to work as a pharmacist at Charlotte and Rideau. His dad died in 1970, and they bought an apartment building and called it Sadlers: Sam, Abe, Dave, Laz, Edith, Reub and Saul at the corner of McLaren and Cartier. Expanded their pharmacies with Rick and Norm Loeb who ran IGA. Recalls his French commandant who was anti-semtic and tried to make it difficult for Jewish boys to go to service. The French colonel was sent home. Tape 1 ends Dave belonged to Rideau St. Shul, Rebel Shu, and Murray St. Shul. Rebel Shul was made up of 25-30 men who had left Rideau Shul and started their own in 1926. In Beth shalom he was on the board, and chairman of a men’s breakfast club. He was part of B’nai Brith for 50 years, becoming an honorary member in 1939 when he joined the army. Dave attempted to join the YMCA in 1939, but was told they had met their quota of Jews. After the war, they wanted him to join but he declined and explained the anti-semitism he experienced Dave has visited Israel several times, the first time in 1968. His wife had several cousins over there. Dave was chairman and president of B’nai Brith for a couple years. He used to volunteer at the old folks home. Recalls personal stories about friends, and explains he enjoys the community feeling of Ottawa. Recalls a story about his time in Rome during the war. Rome was taken by the Americans, who refused to let any other allies settle inside the city. Dave had learned to speak Italian. He was talking with a civilian, and he asked if there were any Jews around. It was Friday and they were opening up the Shul for the first time that night. The chief rabbi of Rome had been hiding in the Vatican, so Dave and another went to the Shul. Dave’s advice to young Jews is not to hate anyone. Recalls a story about the anti-semitism his brother faced when he moved north for work. Recalls a story about a Palestinian colleague. Discusses the Palestine-Israel conflict. Audio ends Tape 2 ends.
