OBITUARIES: Telegraph Journal, April 14, 1997 Selick, Sadie Smia – After a lengthy illness on April 11,1997, Sadie Sima Selick of Sydney Street. Born in Saint John, she was the daughter of the late Avrom Zeva and Annie Selick. She was life long resident of the city and a member of the well-known family of the North End. She spent her whole working life at Bassen's Ltd. on King Street. She was a life long member of the Shaarei Zedek Synagogue, the Sisterhood of the Synagogue and a member of the Hadassah WIZO. She is survived by one brother, Harry (Hank) Selick of Toronto; two sisters, Thea Schilling of New York , Helen Selick of Saint John, many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by several sisters and a brother. Funeral service will be held at 'Hillsley'Funeral Home, 91 Leinster Street (634-1700) on Monday, April 14, 1997 at 2:00 p.m. Interment in Shaarei Zedek Cemetery. Born in Saint John, he was a son of the late Benjamin and Sarah (Budovitch) Swetsky, He was a lifelong resident of Saint John and had worked as a retailer for many years. He was a member of the Shaarei Zedek Congregation. He was a member Shomer Club and a member of the ritual committee of the Shaarei Zedek Synagogue. Besides his companion, he is survived by two sisters, Freda Appel of Ottawa, Ont., and Pearl Steinberg of Montreal, Que.; one brother, Louis Swetsky of Fredericton; several nieces and nephews. The body is resting at Castle Funeral Home (Hillsley), 91 Leinster Street, from where the funeral will be held on Wednesday with service at 3 p.m. Interment in Shaarei Zedek Cemetery. OBITUARIES: Telegraph Journal, November 8, 1997 The death of Perla Arditti of Toronto, formerly of Saint John, occurred at her home on Thursday, November 6, 1997. Daughter of Dr. Joseph and Renee Arditti of Saint John. She was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1959. In addition to her parents, she is survived by her brother, Eliezer Arditti of Saint John, an aunt, Esther Menda Assalian of Montreal and relatives in Israel and Turkey. She received her early education in Saint John and graduated from Dalhousie University in Halifax with a degree in Psychology. In 1980 she relocated to Toronto where she became involved in counselling in the 'Youth in Trouble Program' designed to help young people experiencing difficulty coping in society. She later entered the real estate field and when illness curtailed her mobility she became a mortgage broker. She later became Youth Director at the Adat Israel Synagogue and at the time of her death was organizing and working with Multiple Sclerosis support group. She will be returned to Saint John with funeral services to be held on Monday, November 10, 1997 at the Ocean View Funeral Home 'Hillsley Chapel', 91 Leinster Street (634-1712) with service at 2 p.m. Interment in Shaarei Zedek Cemetery. He studied the film industry and painting extensively at UCLA, from where he graduated. He enjoyed painting. Eliezer is survived by his parents, as well as many cousins, aunts and uncles. OBITUARIES: Evening Times Globe, August 13, 1970 By accident in Huntsville, Ont., on August 13, 1970, Lyle Abraham Isaacs, aged 19, son of Lawrence and Ruth (Shane) Isaacs of 21 Orange Street, Saint John; survived by his parents and one sister. The body will arrive by air Friday afternoon, and rest at the Calvin Funeral Home (Hillsley), 91 Leinster Street, where services will be held on Sunday at 2 p.m. Internment in Shaarei Zedek Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be sent to the Lyle Isaacs Memorial Scholarship Fund for perpetual student aid, at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. P.O. Box 547, Saint John. The Evening Times Globe Thursday, August 13, 1970 Car Crash Claims Local Youth Lyle Abraham Isaacs, 20, a second-year high honors student at York University in Toronto and an active participant in the local Jewish community, was killed Wednesday in an automobile accident near Huntsville, Ontario, 160 miles north of Toronto. He was the son of Mr. Lawrence and Ruth (Shane) Isaacs 0f 21 Orange Street. Police report that his car collided with a tractor-trailer on a highway near Huntsville. At the time of his death, Mr. Isaacs, was program director at Camp Bilben, a national leadership training institute of Canadian Young Judaea. In 1968, Mr. Isaacs graduated in second place with high honors from Saint John High School and was named outstanding student of the year. He was president of the high school student council and helped to introduce a foster-parent plan in the school. Previous to that, he was president of the Prince Charles School student council and won outstanding student award at that school. In 1968-69, he spent one year in a leadership-training program in Israel, and was elected national president of the Canadian Young Judaea. He was serving his second term in that position at the time of his death. In May 1970, he returned to Israel on behalf of Young Judaea to find a program director for the Central region of the Zionist youth movement. Besides his parents, he is survived by one sister, Mrs. Avi Ram, Israel. The body is resting at the Calvin Funeral Home (Hillsley), 91 Leinster Street, where the service will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. Interment will be in the Shaarei Zedek Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be sent to the Lyle Isaacs Memorial Scholarship Fund for Perpetual Student Aid at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, P.O. Box 547, Saint John. OBITUARIES: Telegraph Journal, September 7, 2005 Selby, Sanford Isaac - The death of Sanford 'Sandy' Selby, of Germain Street, Saint John, N.B. occurred at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Tuesday, September 6, 2005. Born in Saint John, he was a son of the late Lewis and Bessie (Ware) Selby. Sandy attended Princess Anne and Prince Charles School, before working at the family business, Princess Dress Shop on Union Street, and later was employed for the City of Saint John for 30 years. He was a member of the Adanac Club, Outside Workers Union Local #18 and was also a longtime member of Congregation Shaarei Zedek. Sandy was also involved with the High 'Y', and enjoyed darts, baseball, hockey, bowling and calling Bingo. Survived by two brothers, Michael Selby (Juanita) of Hornby Island, B.C. and Robert Selby of Quispamsis, N.B.; step-brother, Allen Selby and his partner, Stephen of Fredericton, N.B. and one niece, Shoshanah Claire Selby. Popular Member of Jewish Community Passes in Hospital The death of Miss Rae Guss, 48 Summer Street, which occurred at the General Hospital at an early hour this morning, has caused widespread regret among her many friends. Miss Guss had been in failing health for some time. Born in Dorbian, Lithuania, a daughter of Max and the late Mary Guss, she had resided in Saint John for thirty years, where she was highly esteemed. She is survived by her father, by two sisters, Mrs. Joseph Tobin, with whom she had made her home and Mrs. Jacob Smith of Moncton, also by several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be held this afternoon from the residence of her sister, Mrs. Tobin, Summer Street at 3:30 o'clock, with Rev. N. Borenstein and Rev. A. Babb officiating. OBITUARIES: Evening Times Globe, January 11, 1939, Page 185, SB Series 93 Faye M. Whitebone Passes Suddenly Faye Muriel, only daughter of William M. and Mabel (Hazelhurst) Whitebone, 47 Stanley Street, died suddenly in the General Hospital this morning. Miss Whitebone had not enjoyed good health for several years but there was no warning of the sudden attack that caused her death. During the night she became seriously ill and removal to the hospital for emergency treatment was ordered by her physician. The young lady's death proved a shock to her household and was heard among her friends with surprise and regret. She had enjoyed a large acquaintance and was a member of several clubs which during the time of her prolonged convalescence occasionally met with her in her home. Besides her parents she leaves two brothers, William B. and Russell H. Whitebone. The funeral will be held from her residence on Friday at 2:30 p.m. with interment in Fernhill Cemetery. Evening Times Globe Friday, November 30, 1990 Milton (Mickey) Bassen of 400 Douglas Avenue, husband of Patricia (Ganong) Bassin died on Thursday at his residence after a period of failing health. Born in Saint John, he was a son of the late Carl and Minnie Bassen. He attended local schools and Sir George William University in Montreal. He served in the Canadian Air Force during the Second World War. He was a well-known businessman and served, with his late parents, as manager of Bassin's Ltd. on King Street. He was a member of the Shaarei Zedek Synagogue and the Jewish War Veterans. He is survived by his wife; one sister, Helen Scheeberg of Philadelphia; two nieces, Karen Goodhart of New York and Susan Bronstein of San Francisco; and by several cousins. The body is resting at Castle Funeral Home (Hillsley), 91 Leinster Street, form where the funeral will be held today at 3 p.m. Interment will be in Shaarei Zedek Cemetery.
