- History / Biographical
- Abe Hochberg (b. 1928- d. 2005) was the son of Yetta (b. 1896- d. 1977) and Nathan Hochberg (b. 1896-d. 1933). The Hochebergs immigrated to Canada from Poland in 1928, and first stopped in Montreal before settling permanently in Ottawa. Five years after their arrival, Nathan Hochberg passed away suddenly, leaving Abe along with his mother, and siblings Hy Hochberg (b. 1923- d. 1985) and Rose (m. Harry Goldberg) to fend for themselves and to tend the family's small lunch counter on Nicholas Street. As a teenager in the 1940's Abe became involved with the 39th Jewish Scout Troop (later renamed the 39th Henry Hank Torontow Scout Troop). Too young to enlist in World War II, He amassed 300 War Hours and more Proficiency Badges than any other of his fellow scouts. From the scouts he joined the Macabee Air Cadet Squadron. And later in the 1940's became a Scout Leader. In 1954, Abe took on the role of Director of the Sunday morning services for the Hanoar Breakfast Club. Abe was first employed by Joe Feller where he first got his start in the tailoring business. Abe went on to open his own men's tailoring shop named Gentleman's Fine Apparel, which was located at 204 Rideau Street.

- Ita Aber was born in Montreal, in 1932 and grew up in a family dedicated to Zionist and charitable causes. She later moved to New York, where she made her name as an artist. As described in a 2001 article; "Ita Aber is an artist who delights in unconventional formats that provide unique and startling insights into Jewish Life. Her work is found in almost every major Jewish museum throughout the world. She is a master of the fabric arts, which is by its very nature, an interdisciplinary field. As practiced by Ita Aber, the fabric arts explode in scale to include the diverse skills of embroidering, beadwork, sewing, appliqué, silkscreen, jewelry design, weaving, painting, sculpture, and assemblage. The stunning range of her talents is reflected in the vast array of work and Judaic objects she has produced, from wall hangings, jewelry, and sculpture to Torah covers, etrog boxes, and Purim masks." Ita Aber is also known as a conservator of textiles, an art historian, a curator, teacher, and the author of The Art of Judaic Needlework: Traditional and Contemporary designs (Scribner 1979).

- Scope and Content
- The initial portion of this collection is comprised of documents relating to, and photos of Rose Gotlieb and Hyman Anchel's involvement with the YM-YWHA and B'nai Brith in Montreal. It includes such documents as programs and photographs from various YM-YWHA and B'nai Brith events, documents relating to issues at the 'Y' between 1929-1966, as well as ephemera from various sporting events from the 1920s to 1970s. In addition there are a number of documents relating to Gotlieb's involvement in Minstrel shows at the Y in the 1930s and 1940s. Added in June 2022: additional documents and photos from Rose Gotlieb and Hyman Anchel concerning involvement in the YM-YWHA and B'nai Brith in Montreal as well as with regard to attendance in Montreal schools and after-school activities. The documents consist of two ephemeral items from 1944: a YMHA swimming test result and a B'nai Brith 'Showboat' notice, plus a few news clippings from the 1980s about the history of the YMHA. The 15 images are: 7 pictures of Baron Byng High school students and events donated by former student Joseph Gilbert, including two of the 1957 graduating Prom, plus a program for the Baron Byng High School reunion of 2007; 1 image 8" x 10" of a YMHA Minstrel show group probably late 1930s, including Rose Gotlieb, mother of the donor, and and two very large framed images of YMHA Minstrel performers, both including players in blackface (one large image is a duplicate of the smaller one), circa 1940. Protestant school images from Gloria Anchel Gilbert consist of one from Fairmount elementary school circa 1953 and one from Northmount High School circa 1956. There are two oversized group photos from Pripstein's Camp Mishmar in St-Adolphe de Howard, Quebec, one dated 1956 and one undated - both are damaged, cut into three sections each. There are 2 images of the Jewish People's School afternoon section, also 1956, and one of a Westmount ballet class including a 3 year old Gloria Anchel, 1948. Artifacts donated along with the collection consist of 2 trophies from the B'nai Brith Bowling Association, for Hy Anchel 1972-1973 and 1976.

- Hyman Anchel (1914-1983) and Rose Gotlieb (1912-1987) were born in Montreal to immigrants from Romania and Russia. Hyman Anchel was active in B'nai Brith as the social service chairman for many years. A wrestling champion at the YMHA, Hy also was one of the three members to open the Y pool in 1929. In 1953, he 'swam' out of the Y with his children Gloria and Stanley and opened the new Snowden Y pool. Rose Gotlieb was a member of the Y Minstrels, which entertained Canada's troops during World War II. Their daughter Gloria Anchel Gilbert married Joseph Gilbert, also of Montreal in 1965 and re-located to London, Ontario. Joseph is the son of Morris Gilbert and Silvia Schwam who immigrated from Dobzyn on the Vistula, Poland in 1935 and 1930 respectively.

- During the early 1930s, synagogues in Ottawa were having difficulty retaining the services of rabbis due to financial challenges facing the congregations. As a result, a committee known as the Associated Synagogues of Ottawa was formed with the purpose of hiring a community rabbi to act as the spiritual leader for the entire Jewish community. At the time, the Jewish community was exclusively Orthodox and numbered approximately 2,800 people. Early in 1933, after several months of negotiations, each of the four congregations; Agudath Achim Congregation (Rideau Street), Machzikei Hadas Congregation (Murray Street), B’nai Jacob Congregation (James Street) and Congregation of Adath Jeshurun (King Edward Street), agreed to pay a proportionate amount of the rabbi’s salary of $2500.00 per year. Rabbi Rev. Abraham H. Freedman was the Associated Synagogues of Ottawa’s first appointment and became Ottawa’s first Community Rabbi. Proportionate payment continued to be the standard working formula for the next 20 years for employing five different, “community” or “city” rabbis. With the successful engagement of Rabbi Freedman, the next logical step for the community was the formation of a community council, or Vaad Ha’Ir. Mr. Casper Caplan put forth this motion during a meeting of the Associated Synagogues of Ottawa on August 28, 1933, where he is quoted as having proposed that “the executives of the Associated Synagogues of Ottawa recommend that a Vaad Ha’Ir of twenty-six members be appointed by the Congregations ... and that this body administer the various branches of Jewish activities in the city, principally Kashrut, Jewish education and spiritual guidance, with powers to act for the Congregations in the advancement of Judaism in our city”. The Associated Synagogues were then organized into the Ottawa Vaad Ha’Ir in 1934.

- Documents include a scrapbook of fragile newclippings and publicity about the United Palestine Appeal of 1940-1941; two bound volumes of Canadan Zionist, vols 7 and 8 (1939-1941); two scrapbook folders of photocopies, one of congratulatory letters from when Harry Batshaw became a judge in 1950, and one of newsclippings dating from this time (These photocopies are additions to the materials already at CJ Archives in Harry Batshaw's box, ZB collection). There is an album of photographs and documents about events such as the Negev dinner honouring Harry Batshaw, and other events (JNF, Allience Israelite Universelle, Harry Batshaw Foundation, etc). The dinner photos include pictures of family members who attended. A second photo album contains mostly family photos and portraits. Among the regular sized and smaller photographs, both loose and in albums, there are several portraits of Harry Batshaw taken at various times, including in judge's robes; picture of Harry with son Lewis (aged around 9), both wearing military-style uniforms, in front of their Westmount house; picture of son Lewis Batshaw on a boat at the Lord Reading Yacht Club and a small picture of him circa 1942 (aged around 8) holding a fish at the family's country home on Lake Connolly; family pictures in album including at Yacht Club and Lake Connolly. Two large photos: group photo of the Workman's Circle of Montreal, 1940 with Harry's father identified in the group; composite photo of Jewish judges in Canada at time of Canada's Centennial in 1967. Two large rolled JNF certificates, one with several Montreal signatures. One large rolled certificate from Hebrew University of Jerusalem. One of the loose documents in the family album is the marriage certificate for Harry Batshaw and Anne Tarshis, 1928. Other loose documents in the collection include ephemera from a royal visit to Canada and materials pertaining to the Allience Israelite Universelle and other topics. Objects: 1956 Negev Dinner commemorative certificate for Harry Bartshaw, with photo and map of land, wax seal, ribbon; in wooden-cover book inside a box. 7 medals for various commemorative honours, in an open box; two are of the same type in large and small versions, René Cassin Human Rights award, Coronation of Queen Elizabeth, Canada's 1967 Centennial. One interview of Harry Batshaw on audiocassette speaking about his brother Manny, 14 minutes 30 seconds (a digital copy was made from the tape on Feb 1, 2017.)

- Born in 1902, Harry Batshaw was a lawyer and a judge. He was educated at McGill University and at the Sorbonne, appointed King's Counsel in 1940 and made a Judge of the Quebec Superior Court in 1950. He was the first Jew to be appointed to a Superior Court in Canada. He was very active in Jewish community issues: notably he was honorary vice-president of the Zionist Organization of Canada; secretary of the Baron de Hirsch Institute; president of Canadian Young Judea; and cochairman of the Canadian Council of Christians and Jews. He helped found Amitiés culturelles Canada-Français-Israël. He died in 1984.

- The collection consists primarily of 15 albums/scrapbooks, as well as additional photographs, correspondence, and documents. The collection documents Allan, Lucy, and Edward's professional and philanthropic endeavors, as well as the family life of Allan and Lucy Bronfman and their three children, including childhood photos and family vacations. There are 7 large albums measuring at least 16" in length; included in this group are two which document Allan's birthday dinners in 1945, one in Montreal and the other in New York and relating to the Seagram business there, and one photo album from Allan's birthday party in New York in 1955. There is an album of correspondence relating to Allan's Man of the Year Israel Bonds event in 1964 and an album documenting the Jewish National Fund of Toronto Negev Dinner Tribute to Edward in 1997. A highlight of the album collection is a personal compendium of Edward's which has many photos and documents focused on the family life of Allan, Lucy, and their children Mona, Edward, and Peter. This volume includes some materials relating to Lucy's sister Lillian Bilsky Freiman, such as a news clipping from the summer of 1937 documenting a garden party for the Women's Auxiliary of the Jewish General Hospital given by Lucy and Lillian at Lucy's family home in Montreal. It also displays documents relating to Lucy's charitable work, her service as Chairman of the Hospitality Committee for the Jewish General Hospital Ball in 1938 and her service as Honorary Chairman of a concert given for the Canadian Aid to Russia Fund in 1943. There are 6 medium sized albums; included among these is a Bar Mitzvah album documenting Edward's Bar Mitzvah at Shaar Hashomayim Synagogue in Montreal in late 1940, which reflects the social climate of the war years in Canada. Also included in this group are two albums entitled "Lucy and Allan", documenting family travels as well as photos of Allan with famous figures such as Moishe Dayan, Golda Meir, and David Ben-Gurion. These 2 volumes include photos taken at City Hall with the Mayor of Montreal, and one of Allan and Lucy at Expo '67. There are 2 small albums; both are family focused photo albums, one dating from 1940s-1970s and consisting of family photos, vacation pictures, images of summer camp, and sports photographs. The other album consists mostly of childhood photos of Mona and Edward in the 1930s taken in Old Orchard as well as in Westmount, Quebec. The other components of the collection consist of a copy of Mary Seeman's chapter on Edward in the Canadian Psychiatric Research Foundation's 25th Anniversary Book, 23 loose photos, 1 Metal and wood plaque from the Sun Youth Organization to the Edward M. Bronfman Foundation, and 11 cm. of loose documents, many of them full newspapers containing obituaries for Edward Bronfman. One typed document consists of the eulogies delivered at Edward's funeral.

- Allan Bronfman (1895-1980) was born in Brandon, Manitoba. He was a barrister, industrialist, philanthropist and a Zionist. He studied law at the University of Manitoba, and obtained his law degree at the age of 22. At the age of 24, he became the chairman of a Jewish orphanage in Winnipeg. In 1924, he left Winnipeg for Montreal, and joined the family's liquor business, Seagram's Ltd., where he served as vice-president. He was a founder and the driving force behind the creation of Montreal's Jewish General Hospital, where he served as its first president, a post which lasted 25 years, as well as the founder of the Canadian Friends of Hebrew University in Israel. His wife Lucy Bronfman (1897-1983) was born Lucy Bilsky to parents Pauline and Moses Bilsky of Ottawa. One of her sisters was Lillian Bilsky Freiman of Ottawa, former president of the Hadassah Organization of Canada, social organizer, philanthropist, and community leader. Lucy was also active in charitable Jewish and Canadian organizations. These activities included her service as Chairman of the Hospitality Committee for the Jewish General Hospital Ball in 1938. She also served as Honorary Chairman of a concert given for the Canadian Aid to Russia Fund in 1943. Lucy and Allan had three children, Mona, Edward, and Peter. Mona (1924-1950) was active in charitable and artistic endeavors. In 1935, she served as president of the Montreal children's committee of the King George V Jubilee Forest Drive, while her aunt Lillian Bilsky Freiman served as national chairman of the organization and helped to inspire and organize the children's committee. Edward (1927-2005), and Peter (1929-1996) started the holding company and investment vehicle Edper Investments Ltd. in 1959. Edward was committed to the philanthropic tradition handed down from his parents; he was very active in charitable organizations such as the Canadian Council for Christians and Jews, the Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business, the Canadian Foundation for AIDS Research, and the Canadian Psychiatric Research Foundation. In 1989 Edward formed the Edward Bronfman Family Foundation, a member of Philanthropic Foundations of Canada. As documented in Mary Seeman's chapter on Edward in the CPRF 25th Anniversary Book, the Edward Bronfman Family Foundation created a $1.5 million endowment fund in 2001, in partnership with the Canadian Psychiatric Research Foundation, the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health Foundation, and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research to support a Postdoctoral Fellowship Award in the area of mood disorders. Named the Mona Bronfman Sheckman Post-Doctoral Fellowship Award, it commemorates the life of Edward's sister Mona, who suffered from severe post-partum depression and committed suicide in 1950 at age 26.

- Morris Goldberg (b. February 21, 1900, Poland - November 17, 1978, Ottawa) was the proprietor of Chateau Furs Limited from 1939 to 1986. He partnered with Edward Gittleson in 1939, and Morris later bought out his partner in 1948. Morris Goldberg arrived in Ottawa from Poland in 1921, to join his brother Louis. Morris began his career as a fur trader and worked with Louis in the Pontiac region. The brothers bought furs from trappers and sold them in Montreal, while Morris would occasionally sew fur coats. Morris Goldberg married Zena Jeanne (nee Cohen) Goldberg (b. May 24, 1908 - d. December 18, 1982) in 1930. Zena’s mother Celia had immigrated from Russia in 1907, the same year that she married Zena’s father, Isaac Cohen. Zena had five sisters; Mrs. Israel Zavod, Hannah Kondall, Betty Haufrecht, Lillian Ascher, and Ann Paylan. Zena and Morris had two sons, Arnell and Lewis, as well as two grandchildren, Eden and Joshua. Chateau Furs Limited opened in 1939, at 107 Bank St., on the corner of Bank and Albert Streets. At this point, Morris Goldberg had 17 years of experience working in the raw fur trade. While the store originally had only one floor, it would eventually expand into a four-storey operation, which included the showroom, two floors of refrigerated fur storage vaults, and a floor dedicated to the fur factory. Most of the fur coats sold in the showroom were made in the factory, which helped the store to keep costs lower. While the store was advertised as a luxury retailer which prioritized quality over low prices, they also conducted large, store-wide sales every January and August for many years in which their expensive coats and other accessories were sold for much lower prices. The specific furs used changed over the decades that the store was in operation as styles evolved, and included muskrat, seal, lamb, opossum, mink, beaver, rabbit, raccoon, otter, and squirrel. Chateau Furs mainly advertised fashionable, high-end fur coats for women, available in a variety of sizes including petite and tall, from 7-44. In addition to selling new coats, Chateau Furs also offered a variety of services for the upkeep of their garments, such as repairing and remodeling old coats, as well as cleaning and cold storage available for the summer months in temperature-controlled vaults to help customers maintain the quality of their furs. They also accepted custom orders, and redesigned old coats to meet new fashion trends. They advertised that all of their furs were fully insured for 12 months after purchasing. In 1948, Morris Goldberg bought out his partner and continued to operate Chateau Furs as the sole proprietor. In April of 1956 he moved the business to 144 Sparks Street. The shop sustained some damage during a natural gas explosion in October of 1958, which originated from the Addressograph-Multigraph building on Slater St. Several buildings were completely or partially damaged in the explosion, and many businesses such as Chateau Furs experienced minor damage, mainly from broken windows. Morris Goldberg was a member of the Ottawa Fur Standards Association, and served as president of the organization in the 1950s. He continued to serve as an executive in the 1960s. Morris Goldberg was listed as one of the founders of Agudath Israel, and he served as the Synagogue President from 1942-1947. He also participated in the dedication ceremonies to the new Agudath Israel Synagogue in 1960. Zena Goldberg was active in several organizations in the Ottawa Jewish community. She was a charter member of the Mollie Sachs Chapter of Hadassah-WIZO, and served two terms as its president. After her death, one of Zena’s friends recalled that the Goldberg home was always a happy one, and was the first place that new or visiting Rabbis would come to eat and sleep. Edward Gittleson (b. approx. 1901, d. 1 Jul 1988) and his wife Sonia (nee Herman) Gittleson (b. Approx. 1899, d. November 26, 1986) were the presidents of B’nai Brith Lodge No. 885 and the Ottawa Ladies Auxilliary No. 62 respectively, in 1938-39. Edward became vice-chairman, then chairman of the board of directors in the 1940s, while Sonia was in charge of food services in 1946. As chairman of the B’nai Brith Camp Committee in 1950, Edward was involved in much of the planning and installation of the camp’s facilities. He also sat on the board of directors for the Jewish Home for the Aged in the 1950s and 1960s. Mr. and Mrs. Gittleson had two daughters; Zara, who married Milton Leff in 1954, and Roslyn Ann, who married Arthur Kofman in 1955.

- Debuteen Fair was a store owned and operated by Mrs Frances Fagin. It was located at 171 Bank Street. Frances Cohen was born in Ottawa in 1916. She married Alec Fagin in 1941 and gave birth to Sheila (February 4, 1947) and Jeffrey (January 18, 1954). Alec died on September 16, 1955. Newly windowed and with two young children to care for, Frances decided to open up her own business selling children's clothing. According to her newphew: "She had no money to purchase the inventory to fill the store but she went to Montreal to visit the garment factories, introduced herself and told each one on the factory owners, 'My name is Frances Fagin, I am opening up a children's clothing store in Ottawa and I have no money to pay you. But I will do my very best to make the store a success. Will you please supply me with your garments?' Most or all of the factories were owned by Jews and what my Aunt told me was every factory she visited took the leap of faith in this young Jewish widow with two young children to support and supplied her with their wares." The business thrived with Frances determination, intelligence, and drive to succeed. She was very successful in her marketing through creating and producing live television commercials with a local media personality Peter Jennings, long time ABC News Anchor. Frances become widely recognized for her business acumen and marketing skills and won the prestigious Judy Award for merchandising excellence from the Garmant Salesman Ontario Market Association in 1963 and 1966. She married Israel Krantzberg in the 1970s. Debuteen Fair was still in business until at least 1973. Frances died June 5, 2002 in Toronto, age 86.

- Moishe Eliasoph emigrated from Riga, Latvia in the 1910s and became a prominent Rabbi in Quebec City. His sister Sophie had a store in Bilderingshof, near Riga, along the coast in Latvia. After she became a widow, she immigrated to Canada in 1924. Their brother Leopold remained behind in Latvia where he died in WWII, along with his wife Glasha and their three sons David, Misha, and Boris. Sophie married Phillip David Rosengarten (in Riga) in 1896. He died in Riga in 1919. They were the parents of William, who was the grandfather of the donor of this collection.

- Elliott Levitan was born to Maurice and Fanny Levitan on August 19, 1927 in Ottawa, Ontario. He married Sally (Sara) Brill on April 1, 1951 and they had five children together; Joe (Rhoda), Marilyn, Barbara, Shirley (Bill Rogers), and Annie (Len Kahansky). In his youth, Elliott was an excellent athlete participating in many sports tournaments and in 1992 was inducted into the Ottawa Jewish sports hall of fame. Elliott was also the president and partial owner of Bakermet Inc., a scrap metal processing facility located within a large industrial park in the City of Ottawa. It was a leader in the scrap metal and recycling industry and successfully operating for over 50 years. He died July 20, 2019 at the age of 91 after a battle with ill health.

- Montreal businessman Norman Friedman was chairman of the Jewish Advisory Committee of the Boy Scouts Association and assistant regional commissioner of the Boy Scouts Association. Friedman and his wife Rose were both life governors of the Jewish General Hospital, and he was also an honorary governor of the Montreal General Hospital. The Friedmans entertained frequently in their home, as documented in their guest book. Norman Friedman died in Montreal in 1981.

- Asaf lIizarov est né à Bakou, URSS, Ie 6 mars 1922. En 1945, il a été admis au " Military University of the Ministry of Defence" et à la fin de ses études, iI est devenu traducteur de la langue russe, arabe, persane, turque, anglaise et francaise. Au URSS, entre 1957 et 1975, Asaf lIizarov a été engagé comme l'interprète officiel dans les conferences internationales, surtout pour les élégations des pays arabes. Le 28 septembre 1975, il a quitté I'URSS pour venir à Vienne (Autriche). De 1975-1976, il a enseigné I'anglais à Rome. En 1976, il est arrive au Canada. In USSR, in 1957-1975, Asaf lIizarov was hired as the official interpreter of an international conference, especially for the delegations of the Arab countries. On September 28th, 1975, he left USSR to come to Vienna (Austria). From 1975 to 1976, he taught English in Rome. In 1976, he arrived in Canada. In 1980, Ilizarov received Canadian citizenship. In Ottawa, he was professor of the Russian language at the Canadian Armed Forces school. In addition, he participated in public and professional organisations: the Canada-Israel Cultural Foundation, the Royal Canadian Legion. He was a linguist, specialising in language education, translation and terminology of interpretation. His interests included Sovietology, current problems in the Middle East, and the situation of Jews in Soviet countries.

- The collection is divided into five series. The first series contains a copy of Abraham Joseph's diary from the 18th century, transcripts of the diary by Annette Wolff, and original pre-1900 materials pertaining to Abraham Joseph and other members of his family. The second series consists in large part of correspondence between Martin Wolff and Irene Joseph Wolff, before and after their marriage, and letters to their daughters. The third series consists primarily of correspondence between the Wolff sisters. The fourth series contains correspondence from Annette Wolff to her family and friends, letters received from soldiers during World War II, and documents and memorabilia relating to her education, employment, and travels. The fifth series consists of Wolff and Joseph family photographs. The last series is composed of sound elements. It contains 7 cassette tapes, each 90 minutes in duration, of interviews of Annette Wolff by Eiran Harris

- The Joseph family was one of the earliest Jewish families to settle in Quebec. Irene Joseph (1885 1940), a writer and community worker, married Martin Wolff, (1881 1948) engineer and historian, and they had six daughters. The lives and thoughts of all these individuals are reflected in this fonds. The earliest portions of the fonds contains considerable information about the life of Abraham Joseph (1815-1886), a successful businessman involved in numerous commercial enterprises, including leadership roles in the Quebec Board of Trade and the Banque Nationale. The greater part of this portion of the fonds is connected to Abraham Joseph's diaries, which are a valuable early record of Jewish life and material culture in Quebec. Much of the material in the later series of the fonds documents the life of the Wolff family in Montreal and Quebec in the early 20th century until the late 1940s, and includes information about quotidian life and religious and social customs as practiced by a middle-class Jewish family of that era. Though observant Jews, the Wolff family members mixed with and were accepted by the larger community, making this fonds a source of information on many aspects of Canadian society as well as that of Great Britain. The fonds includes a special emphasis on the work and writings of Annette Wolff, who took on the role of family historian. The Joseph and Wolff family fonds contains material of potential interest to historians, students of Jewish life in Canada and women's studies, social scientists, psychologists, journalists, and authors.
- Custodial History
- The majority of this fonds was donated in increments, over a period of several years, by sisters Annette Wolff, Rosetta Wolff Elkin, and Esther Wolff Blaustein, with the greatest part of the collection coming from Annette Wolff. A small percentage of the material was donated by Rachel Wolff Esar, and a few files were deposited much earlier by Martin Wolff.
