History / Biographical
Ita Aber was born in Montreal, in 1932 and grew up in a family dedicated to Zionist and charitable causes. She later moved to New York, where she made her name as an artist. As described in a 2001 article; "Ita Aber is an artist who delights in unconventional formats that provide unique and startling insights into Jewish Life. Her work is found in almost every major Jewish museum throughout the world. She is a master of the fabric arts, which is by its very nature, an interdisciplinary field. As practiced by Ita Aber, the fabric arts explode in scale to include the diverse skills of embroidering, beadwork, sewing, appliqué, silkscreen, jewelry design, weaving, painting, sculpture, and assemblage. The stunning range of her talents is reflected in the vast array of work and Judaic objects she has produced, from wall hangings, jewelry, and sculpture to Torah covers, etrog boxes, and Purim masks." Ita Aber is also known as a conservator of textiles, an art historian, a curator, teacher, and the author of The Art of Judaic Needlework: Traditional and Contemporary designs (Scribner 1979).

Scope and Content
The collection consists primarily of 15 albums/scrapbooks, as well as additional photographs, correspondence, and documents. The collection documents Allan, Lucy, and Edward's professional and philanthropic endeavors, as well as the family life of Allan and Lucy Bronfman and their three children, including childhood photos and family vacations. There are 7 large albums measuring at least 16" in length; included in this group are two which document Allan's birthday dinners in 1945, one in Montreal and the other in New York and relating to the Seagram business there, and one photo album from Allan's birthday party in New York in 1955. There is an album of correspondence relating to Allan's Man of the Year Israel Bonds event in 1964 and an album documenting the Jewish National Fund of Toronto Negev Dinner Tribute to Edward in 1997. A highlight of the album collection is a personal compendium of Edward's which has many photos and documents focused on the family life of Allan, Lucy, and their children Mona, Edward, and Peter. This volume includes some materials relating to Lucy's sister Lillian Bilsky Freiman, such as a news clipping from the summer of 1937 documenting a garden party for the Women's Auxiliary of the Jewish General Hospital given by Lucy and Lillian at Lucy's family home in Montreal. It also displays documents relating to Lucy's charitable work, her service as Chairman of the Hospitality Committee for the Jewish General Hospital Ball in 1938 and her service as Honorary Chairman of a concert given for the Canadian Aid to Russia Fund in 1943. There are 6 medium sized albums; included among these is a Bar Mitzvah album documenting Edward's Bar Mitzvah at Shaar Hashomayim Synagogue in Montreal in late 1940, which reflects the social climate of the war years in Canada. Also included in this group are two albums entitled "Lucy and Allan", documenting family travels as well as photos of Allan with famous figures such as Moishe Dayan, Golda Meir, and David Ben-Gurion. These 2 volumes include photos taken at City Hall with the Mayor of Montreal, and one of Allan and Lucy at Expo '67. There are 2 small albums; both are family focused photo albums, one dating from 1940s-1970s and consisting of family photos, vacation pictures, images of summer camp, and sports photographs. The other album consists mostly of childhood photos of Mona and Edward in the 1930s taken in Old Orchard as well as in Westmount, Quebec. The other components of the collection consist of a copy of Mary Seeman's chapter on Edward in the Canadian Psychiatric Research Foundation's 25th Anniversary Book, 23 loose photos, 1 Metal and wood plaque from the Sun Youth Organization to the Edward M. History / Biographical
Allan Bronfman (1895-1980) was born in Brandon, Manitoba. He was a barrister, industrialist, philanthropist and a Zionist. He studied law at the University of Manitoba, and obtained his law degree at the age of 22. At the age of 24, he became the chairman of a Jewish orphanage in Winnipeg. In 1924, he left Winnipeg for Montreal, and joined the family's liquor business, Seagram's Ltd., where he served as vice-president. He was a founder and the driving force behind the creation of Montreal's Jewish General Hospital, where he served as its first president, a post which lasted 25 years, as well as the founder of the Canadian Friends of Hebrew University in Israel. His wife Lucy Bronfman (1897-1983) was born Lucy Bilsky to parents Pauline and Moses Bilsky of Ottawa. One of her sisters was Lillian Bilsky Freiman of Ottawa, former president of the Hadassah Organization of Canada, social organizer, philanthropist, and community leader. Lucy was also active in charitable Jewish and Canadian organizations. These activities included her service as Chairman of the Hospitality Committee for the Jewish General Hospital Ball in 1938. She also served as Honorary Chairman of a concert given for the Canadian Aid to Russia Fund in 1943. Lucy and Allan had three children, Mona, Edward, and Peter. Mona (1924-1950) was active in charitable and artistic endeavors. In 1935, she served as president of the Montreal children's committee of the King George V Jubilee Forest Drive, while her aunt Lillian Bilsky Freiman served as national chairman of the organization and helped to inspire and organize the children's committee. Edward (1927-2005), and Peter (1929-1996) started the holding company and investment vehicle Edper Investments Ltd. in 1959. Edward was committed to the philanthropic tradition handed down from his parents; he was very active in charitable organizations such as the Canadian Council for Christians and Jews, the Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business, the Canadian Foundation for AIDS Research, and the Canadian Psychiatric Research Foundation. In 1989 Edward formed the Edward Bronfman Family Foundation, a member of Philanthropic Foundations of Canada. As documented in Mary Seeman's chapter on Edward in the CPRF 25th Anniversary Book, the Edward Bronfman Family Foundation created a $1.5 million endowment fund in 2001, in partnership with the Canadian Psychiatric Research Foundation, the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health Foundation, and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research to support a Postdoctoral Fellowship Award in the area of mood disorders. Named the Mona Bronfman Sheckman Post-Doctoral Fellowship Award, it commemorates the life of Edward's sister Mona, who suffered from severe post-partum depression and committed suicide in 1950 at age 26.

History / Biographical
Morris Goldberg (b. February 21, 1900, Poland - November 17, 1978, Ottawa) was the proprietor of Chateau Furs Limited from 1939 to 1986. He partnered with Edward Gittleson in 1939, and Morris later bought out his partner in 1948. Morris Goldberg arrived in Ottawa from Poland in 1921, to join his brother Louis. Morris began his career as a fur trader and worked with Louis in the Pontiac region. The brothers bought furs from trappers and sold them in Montreal, while Morris would occasionally sew fur coats. Morris Goldberg married Zena Jeanne (nee Cohen) Goldberg (b. May 24, 1908 - d. December 18, 1982) in 1930. Zena’s mother Celia had immigrated from Russia in 1907, the same year that she married Zena’s father, Isaac Cohen. Zena had five sisters; Mrs. Israel Zavod, Hannah Kondall, Betty Haufrecht, Lillian Ascher, and Ann Paylan. Zena and Morris had two sons, Arnell and Lewis, as well as two grandchildren, Eden and Joshua. Chateau Furs Limited opened in 1939, at 107 Bank St., on the corner of Bank and Albert Streets. At this point, Morris Goldberg had 17 years of experience working in the raw fur trade. While the store originally had only one floor, it would eventually expand into a four-storey operation, which included the showroom, two floors of refrigerated fur storage vaults, and a floor dedicated to the fur factory. Most of the fur coats sold in the showroom were made in the factory, which helped the store to keep costs lower. While the store was advertised as a luxury retailer which prioritized quality over low prices, they also conducted large, store-wide sales every January and August for many years in which their expensive coats and other accessories were sold for much lower prices. The specific furs used changed over the decades that the store was in operation as styles evolved, and included muskrat, seal, lamb, opossum, mink, beaver, rabbit, raccoon, otter, and squirrel. Chateau Furs mainly advertised fashionable, high-end fur coats for women, available in a variety of sizes including petite and tall, from 7-44. In addition to selling new coats, Chateau Furs also offered a variety of services for the upkeep of their garments, such as repairing and remodeling old coats, as well as cleaning and cold storage available for the summer months in temperature-controlled vaults to help customers maintain the quality of their furs. They also accepted custom orders, and redesigned old coats to meet new fashion trends. They advertised that all of their furs were fully insured for 12 months after purchasing. In 1948, Morris Goldberg bought out his partner and continued to operate Chateau Furs as the sole proprietor. In April of 1956 he moved the business to 144 Sparks Street. The shop sustained some damage during a natural gas explosion in October of 1958, which originated from the Addressograph-Multigraph building on Slater St. Several buildings were completely or partially damaged in the explosion, and many businesses such as Chateau Furs experienced minor damage, mainly from broken windows. Morris Goldberg was a member of the Ottawa Fur Standards Association, and served as president of the organization in the 1950s. He continued to serve as an executive in the 1960s. Morris Goldberg was listed as one of the founders of Agudath Israel, and he served as the Synagogue President from 1942-1947. He also participated in the dedication ceremonies to the new Agudath Israel Synagogue in 1960. Zena Goldberg was active in several organizations in the Ottawa Jewish community. She was a charter member of the Mollie Sachs Chapter of Hadassah-WIZO, and served two terms as its president. After her death, one of Zena’s friends recalled that the Goldberg home was always a happy one, and was the first place that new or visiting Rabbis would come to eat and sleep. Edward Gittleson (b. approx. 1901, d. 1 Jul 1988) and his wife Sonia (nee Herman) Gittleson (b. Approx. 1899, d. November 26, 1986) were the presidents of B’nai Brith Lodge No. 885 and the Ottawa Ladies Auxilliary No. 62 respectively, in 1938-39. Edward became vice-chairman, then chairman of the board of directors in the 1940s, while Sonia was in charge of food services in 1946. As chairman of the B’nai Brith Camp Committee in 1950, Edward was involved in much of the planning and installation of the camp’s facilities. He also sat on the board of directors for the Jewish Home for the Aged in the 1950s and 1960s. Mr. and Mrs. Gittleson had two daughters; Zara, who married Milton Leff in 1954, and Roslyn Ann, who married Arthur Kofman in 1955.

History / Biographical
The Joseph family was one of the earliest Jewish families to settle in Quebec. Irene Joseph (1885 1940), a writer and community worker, married Martin Wolff, (1881 1948) engineer and historian, and they had six daughters. The lives and thoughts of all these individuals are reflected in this fonds. The earliest portions of the fonds contains considerable information about the life of Abraham Joseph (1815-1886), a successful businessman involved in numerous commercial enterprises, including leadership roles in the Quebec Board of Trade and the Banque Nationale. The greater part of this portion of the fonds is connected to Abraham Joseph's diaries, which are a valuable early record of Jewish life and material culture in Quebec. Much of the material in the later series of the fonds documents the life of the Wolff family in Montreal and Quebec in the early 20th century until the late 1940s, and includes information about quotidian life and religious and social customs as practiced by a middle-class Jewish family of that era. Though observant Jews, the Wolff family members mixed with and were accepted by the larger community, making this fonds a source of information on many aspects of Canadian society as well as that of Great Britain. The fonds includes a special emphasis on the work and writings of Annette Wolff, who took on the role of family historian. The Joseph and Wolff family fonds contains material of potential interest to historians, students of Jewish life in Canada and women's studies, social scientists, psychologists, journalists, and authors.
Custodial History
The majority of this fonds was donated in increments, over a period of several years, by sisters Annette Wolff, Rosetta Wolff Elkin, and Esther Wolff Blaustein, with the greatest part of the collection coming from Annette Wolff. A small percentage of the material was donated by Rachel Wolff Esar, and a few files were deposited much earlier by Martin Wolff.

History / Biographical
The Lord Reading Law Society was founded as a vehicle for lawyers of the Jewish faith "both as a study group and as a representative body." The Society was named after Rufus Daniel Isaacs, a British jurist who later became Lord Reading. The political and social climate of the late 1930s and early 1940s was the impetus for the creation of Society. The Society first formalized its structure in 1948 and has been meeting regularly since then. The first president was the late Mr. Justice Benjamin Robinson. Originally the Society was known as the Reading Society. It changed its name to the Reading Society of Montreal on September 25, 1952. It is not certain exactly when the society changed its name to the Lord Reading Law Society, possibly in 1958.

Milton Shaffer
History / Biographical
Milton Shaffer was born October 8, 1916 in Ottawa, Ontario. He was the son of American-born Abraham Shaffer and Mary Baslaw (original family name was Boguslawsky), who was born in Poltava, Ukraine and immigrated to New York around 1890. He had two brothers, Irving and Harold, who were born in New York, and an older sister, Beatrice and a younger brother, Sheldon, both of whom were born in Ottawa. The Shaffers moved to Ottawa around 1911; Abraham’s parents, Samuel and Mary, nee Katz, were already established there. Abraham and Mary established The Ottawa Bargain Store at 147 Rideau. The family lived above the store until they moved into a home on Marlborough Avenue in Sandy Hill. They continued to operate Shaffer’s Ltd. at the Rideau Street location until 1966. Milton attended York Street School and Lisgar Collegiate Institute. He was active in the Boy Scouts movement and Camp B’nai Brith, and co-founded a chapter of AZA. He and Sarah Fine, younger daughter of Leon and Rachel Feller Fine, had been ‘sweethearts’ since childhood. They married on September 11, 1938 in Montreal. They had three daughters: Ingrid Shaffer Robinson Shapiro (born 1941); Marilyn Shaffer Kimmel (born 1943); Wendy Shaffer Green (born 1945). Milton joined the family business upon graduation from Lisgar and continued there until the business closed some 30 years later. During the Second World War, he volunteered with the Civil Defense Corp and was involved in efforts to control wartime profiteering. Milton was an enthusiastic person willing to share his ideas with anyone who would listen. He was active in the Ottawa Jewish Historical Society, the Lisgar Collegiate Alumni Association, and the Britannia Yacht Club, where he and Sarah sailed and had an active social life. Sarah died in Ottawa in 2012; Milton died in 2015, three months short of his 99th birthday. They were survived by their daughters, 6 grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren.

History / Biographical
Minute Car Wash was started by Pincus Newman (b. Dec. 20, 1881, Austria - d. Feb. 13, 1987, Ottawa) in 1953. The business was owned and operated by the Newman family in Ottawa for many years, and is still operational as of 2022. Pincus Newman was married to Hudi Newman (b. Approx. 1896 - d. May 9, 1970, Ottawa), and had four children; William Newman, Lazarus Newman (born approx. 1927), Helene Zaretsky, and Saul Newman. Pincus Newman served in the Austrian army in the First World War before immigrating to Canada in 1924. His first business was a radiator repair shop on Mosgrove Street, which he operated for nearly 20 years. He opened Minute Car Wash in 1953, allegedly in response to a comment from a man from Detroit who told him that a modern car wash would never survive in Ottawa. The car wash was first opened at 240 Catherine Street, and relocated to its permanent location at 270 Catherine Street in 1963 after being expropriated to allow for construction of the new Queensway. The car wash was designed by Pincus Newman and his sons, and was the first of its kind in Ottawa. Fourteen washers were on hand at all times to ensure that cars were washed thoroughly and quickly. Unlike other car washes, at Minute Car Wash the owner was asked to leave their car, and would watch through a glass walkway as the exterior and interior of their car was cleaned with a combination of machine washers and manual washing. The glass walkway was initially installed in the 1950s to alleviate anxieties from car owners who may be wary of leaving their car to be washed by machines. As of 2022, both interior and exterior car washing are still offered, as well as options for a quick wash, full wash, or carpet shampoo. In addition to washing cars, the business also included a “gas bar,” as well as a shop that sold seat covers which could be custom ordered, and car accessories. Throughout the car wash’s history, they have also offered services such as free road maps and winter car storage. Minute Car Wash has made contributions to charitable causes and events in the Ottawa Jewish community and in the wider Ottawa community, including sponsoring Winterlude, sponsoring the Minute Car Wash softball team, which was part of the Jewish Boys Softball League, donating free car wash tickets to fundraising events at Hillel Academy, and sponsoring the Jewish Federation of Ottawa Annual Golf Tournament. Pincus Newman himself also contributed to multiple charitable causes and organizations throughout his life. He was a trustee and officer of the B’nai B’rith Men’s Ottawa Lodge (no. 885) for a number of years throughout the 1950s and 1960s, and was also a member of Kiwanis International, and the Board of Directors of the Protestant Children’s Orphans’ Home in Rosemere, Quebec. Pincus Newman was awarded a medal in 1978 by Prime Minister John Diefenbaker for being the third largest blood donor in Canada. By the age of 80, he had made a total of 88 blood donations, 87 in Canada and one in Israel. Pincus Newman passed the Minute Car Wash to his sons, Laz (Lazarus) and Bill (William) Newman, who eventually sold the business to Tony Kue Shahrasebi in 2002. Shahrasebi renovated the car wash, but kept the original signs outside from the 1950s, which were visible from the highway.

History / Biographical
This collection contains materials related to the life and death of Flight Sergeant Nathan Dlusy, and the personal and professional lives of his parents and brother. Israel and Regina (nee Cynamon) Dlusniewski emigrated from Poland to Germany in 1920. In Berlin Israel worked as a tailor in his own retail shop, establishing a successful men's clothing manufacturing business which sold products in multiple German haberdasheries and department stores. Their sons Nathan (1921-1944) and Jon (1928-2022) were both born in Berlin before the family fled the anti-semitism of Nazi Germany in 1938. The family settled in Montreal where Israel obtained employment in the clothing manufacturing industry, eventually establishing Earl Clothing with a partner. Nathan followed his father into the same business, but decided to enlist in the Canadian armed forces in 1941. Initially turned down due to his lack of Canadian citizenship, Nathan successfully passed the entrance requirement examinations in 1941 and enlisted in the Canadian air force. In 1942 Nathan officially changed his name from Dlusniewski to Dlusy. Once his training was completed, he was sent to Scotland to join a coastal command squadron. While returning from a patrol mission in poor weather conditions, Nathan and the rest of the 10-person crew crashed into a mountain, killing all on board the plane. At the air base, Nathan Dlusy's funeral was organized by a Jewish air force chaplain, who was a rabbi from Glasgow, and the entire Jewish community from the nearby town attended, as documented by various photographs and news clippings in this collection. At the time of his death, Nathan Dlusy was not a Canadian citizen. His brother Jon continued to request a posthumous declaration of Canadian citizenship from the government. Nathan Dlusy's sacrifice was recognized in Quebec's National Assembly, and the House of Commons in Ottawa in 2019. The collection also includes various instances of Nathan Dlusy's name honoured through donations, the Nathan Dlusy Chapter of Hadassah, and the Nathan Dlusy Respiratory Unit at Mount Sinai Hospital in Montreal, Quebec. Jon Dlusy died at 94, in March of 2022.
Custodial History
The collection was donated on March 15, 2023 by Shawn Apel, estate executor for the Dlusy Family collection.

History / Biographical
Maurice Pollack (January 28, 1885 - December 16, 1968) was a Canadian merchant and philanthropist. Born in Kanele, Kiev, in Ukraine, he arrived in Canada in 1902, and settled in Quebec City, where he opened a department store at the age of 20 years, in the Saint-Roch district of Québec City. M. Pollack Ltd. became one of the largest retail companies in the region and Maurice Pollack was one of Quebec's major philanthropists. In 1942 Quebec MP Louis St-Laurent asked Maurice Pollack to set up a factory to make uniforms for Quebec postal workers during wartime. All the profits from the making of these uniforms resulted in the Maurice Pollack Foundation. Maurice and Rivka (Tarantour) Pollack (born 1890) had three sons; the oldest was Samuel, born 1911, a doctor by profession, married to Nettye Steinberg, daughter of Lazarus and Sophie Steinberg of Joliette QC. Their children were Stuart and Lana; Second son Isadore (Ezekiel) was born in 1913 and became a lawyer. Charles, born 1919, first ran the store and later became a businessman in Philadelphia. They had one daughter Florence, born 1925, who married Sydney Pedvis.

History / Biographical
Max Shenkman came to Canada in 1892. With little knowledge of English he found work assisting in the construction of the inter-provincial bridge spanning Ottawa to Hull (now Gatineau). He turned to peddling with a horse and wagon for his livelihood until he secured a job with the public works department in 1910. Max married Dora Slack in 1905. Dora played a strong and active role in the small Jewish community. She was an ardent worker and a founding member of Hadassah, B'nai B'rith, and the Sisterhood of the Adath Jeshurun Congregation. Max was also an active member of the community. Max died February 12, 1941. Max and Dora raised four sons; Benjamin Paul, Samuel, Abraham Irving and Harold. The youngest, Harold served with the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II. He worked with the department of Agriculture for 33 years. He met Belle Gubler, a pianist, during a recital at Chateau Laurier and they married in 1949. They had two children together, son William and daughter Dasha. Harold and Belle divorced in 1960 and Harold then married Louise Popplau. ***FONDS NEED FACT CHECKING - The names Harold and Joe have been used interchangably. Harold and Joe are cousins. Shirley Berman seems to think that Harold's father is "Wolfe" Harold and his brothers attended Lisgar Collegiate and in 1993, in their memory, Joe established the Shenkman Award for Business Studies. He also created the Max and Dora Shenkman Memorial Fund, the Abraham Irving Shenkman Yiddish Scholarship Fund and the Ottawa Historical Society Fund. Joe was fond of and donated generously to the YM-YWCA and the Boys and Girls Club. "He was a very quiet person, a lot of his donations were anonymous," said his son William. Joe was a real estate magnate, earning a multi-million dollar fortune. He died March 15, 1998.

The collection is comprised of 3 boxes (1 m) containing approximately 2,500 letters, 86 postcards, and 12 photographs. The correspondence dates from the 1920s up to the 1980s (letters and envelopes with stamps, postcards, and cards). There are also a small number of receipts, invitations, and business cards. The majority of the correspondence comes from family members and friends in the former USSR, including letters postmarked from Moscow, Kiev, and Riga. Some correspondence was sent within Canada (Toronto, Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts), or from the USA (New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio), Israel (receipts and acknowledgment letters from charitable organizations) and a DP camp in US-occupied Germany. One small file contains some of Julius Stein's papers and correspondence including letters from the Canadian government regarding his citizenship. While there is a small amount of English-language correspondence, the majority of the letters are handwritten in Russian and Yiddish. An initial assessment completed when the collection was donated notes that the content deals largely with the domestic life of Brodsky-Stein's family and friends in the USSR. Further research by scholars of Yiddish and Russian is needed to obtain more detailed information on the content of most of the correspondence, however it can be assumed that the letters, including envelopes and stamps, would be of interest to researchers interested in the lived experience of Jewish families in the USSR during the 20th century.

History / Biographical
Mania Brodsky Stein (Mania Brodsky/ M. Stein/Mary Stone) was born March 15, 1900 in Uman, Kiev, then part of Russia. Brodsky-Stein emigrated from the former USSR to Canada in the 1920s, along with her brother J. (Jacob/Yaacov) Brodsky, settling in Montreal, Québec. She was married to Julius Stein (born May 3, 1901 in Cologne, Germany, died in 1948, Montreal, Québec). She maintained correspondence with family in the USSR until her death in Montreal in 1986. The collection was donated to the Archives by her son, Henry Stone. A summary from a Yiddish-language profile in the New York paper Der Algemeiner Journal by Jacob Rabinovitch, June 22, 1984, page 12 states: Miriam Stein was a religious woman, well known in the Jewish community for her charitable works/philanthropy, though she was not one to seek recognition. As a young woman in the 1920s, she worked as a housekeeper in other observant religious households. During the post-war period she had a large house on Park Avenue in Montreal, which was open to all. She focused her efforts on new immigrants to North America, particularly young religious men who had trouble finding work due to religious practices such as being unable to work on the sabbath, a number of whom, including individuals who went on to become rabbis, would later remember her support.
Custodial History
The correspondence was kept by Mania Brodsky Stein, as she received them from the 1920s until the 1980s. The collection was donated to the Archives in 1986 by her son, Henry Stone, after her death.
