Lieutenant Lawrence Cohen of Winnipeg, Manitoba, was reported killed in action on July 8, 1944. He enlisted in March 1943 and trained at Gordon Head, Shilo, Vernon and Sussex. He was one of a group of ten officers who were sent from the Infantry Training Instructors School at Camp Shilo, Manitoba, to take a more advanced course at Brockville, Ontario. In May 1944, he volunteered for overseas service as an officer on loan to the Imperial Army. At the time of his death, he was attached to the 2nd Battalion, R.W.R. He transferred to the Winnipeg Grenadiers and went overseas on June 7, 1944. Before landing in France on August 8, he was transferred to the Calgary Highlanders. Private Dubinsky was born in Russia.

Lance Sergeant Jack Faibish of Markinch, Saskatchewan, was officially reported killed in action in the invasion of Normandy, France, on July 28, 1944. He was posthumously awarded the Certificate of Good Service by Field Marshal Lord Montgomery of Errigal. Sergeant Faibish enlisted in the army on September 11, 1939, and went overseas shortly afterwards. His brother, Max, served with the R.C.A.F. in Bombay, India. “Montreal, August 8, 1951 - Earlier, we reported on the policy of the Department of Natural Resources of the province of Saskatchewan to name lakes, rivers and islands in newly surveyed areas in honour of former residents of Saskatchewan who had been killed in action while serving the Canadian Armed Forces. We furnished the Saskatchewan government with a list of Jewish servicemen compiled from our publication ‘Canadian Jews in WWII,’ the first part of which was devoted to those killed during the war. The announcement made by the Saskatchewan government on July 10 included the following locations named after Jewish men: Faibish Bay, after Jack Faibish, son of Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Faibish, Markinch, Sask.; Levine Lake, after David Levine, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Levine, Swift Current, Sask.; Glansberg Lake after Rifleman Maurice Glansberg.” (CJC publication IOI #1175)

Rifleman Israel Freedman, of Winnipeg, Manitoba, was officially reported killed in action in France on July 5, 1944. He was buried in the Canadian Military Cemetery at Beny-sur-Mer, France, beside Rifleman Yude Brownstone of the Royal Winnipeg Rifles. Rifleman Freedman enlisted in November 1941 with the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada and went overseas in June 1942. He was killed in the fighting near Caen. In a letter of condolence to Mrs. Freedman, Company Quartermaster Sergeant B. Rosen, wrote: “Izzy, like other Jewish boys, had something more to fight for, a greater cause, and please console yourself with these few words. We over here are all ready to give our lives that others may live! It is a duty not only to King and Country, but to the Jewish people the world over.” Rifleman Freedman was born in Minsk, Russia.
