- Sergeant Alvin Wartman of Newburgh, Ontario, joined the 5th Field Ambulance when war broke out. According to his obituary in the Toronto Star of October 1916, “He was promoted to corporal but a few days after his enlistment and received his sergeant’s stripes a few weeks later... [He was] wounded during the early days of the Canadian attack at the Somme on Sept. 17” and died from his wounds a month later. Sergeant Wartman was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal. According to the Queen’s University journal of November 21, 1916, the award was bestowed for “his bravery and devotion to duty under circumstances of extreme difficulty during the heavy fighting of Sept. 15th and 16th.”
