- Pilot Officer Samuel Zareikin of Los Angeles, California, was reported missing on active service on May 28, 1943, and subsequently presumed dead for official purposes. At the outbreak of the war, Pilot Officer Zareikin came to Canada, where he enlisted in the Canadian air force. He won his wings as a wireless operator at the No. 2 Wireless School in Calgary in 1941 and went overseas shortly after. He participated in some of the first R.C.A.F. raids on European territory and in the first great raid on Cologne. During that attack, his Wellington bomber had completed its run and laid its bombs squarely on target when it was attacked by three enemy planes. However, the aircraft managed to evade these onslaughts. A brother, Pilot Officer Joe Zareikin, was also killed on active service overseas.
