- Private Issie Bell of Montreal, Quebec, was officially reported killed in action on July 25, 1943. Private Bell enlisted in the Royal Rifles of Canada in 1941. In 1940 he went overseas, where he was posted to the Black Watch. A tribute to Private Bell was contained in a eulogy written by his brother, Joseph Bell. The poem, titled "Monologue of a Dead Soldier," was reproduced in the Montreal Gazette: There is no death for me who, dying falls Upon the wildly shattered Battlefield. There is no death: for do I cease to live The moment hot shrapnel or screeching bomb Detaches me from them who still can breathe? Does living mean to see, to hear, to feel -- Life being an impression of ourselves Portrayed upon the memories of friends? Do souls created by the Cosmic Prince Forfeit in so few years the rights to be? I do not fear that Justice will allow Such perfidy to stand amidst its fold Of Laws and Doctrines everlasting pure And sacred 'till the knell of doomsday tolls. Within these quiet shadows, where I now Abide, there is serenity and peace; The clangours and dissatisfactions fade Behind the cowl of death, I am content. My duty to the world is done; all debts Are paid. My Soul can happily disport Itself across the vistas of our land, Refreshed and solaced by its noble charm That did me prod unto my sacrifice. He was a true son of ancient Israel... I buried him in the cool of the evening using the Old Testament ceremonial provided by the Senior Jewish Chaplain. I hope to see to it that the Star of David is placed above his grave... one of the best loved and inspiring personalities in the 48th Highlanders...." - Lieutenant David Bindman of Thetford Mines, Quebec, was officially reported to have died of wounds suffered in action in Italy. A member of the Victoria Rifles of Canada before the war, he transferred to an engineering unit after the start of hostilities. After training at Quebec City and Toronto, he went overseas in June 1940, where he was commissioned and attached to the Royal Canadian Regiment. A fellow officer from his regiment wrote on the action in which Lieutenant Bindman lost his life: "It was Dave's first real action against the enemy... Dave took out a few men and drove them off, wounding the German officer and capturing two men. Shortly after his return, the warning was shouted that enemy tanks were again about to charge. Dave ran to join his men and was standing on level ground encouraging his men to dig and place weapons when a shell landed within a few feet of him and he received three severe wounds... Although continually under fire and hard pressed, Dave's men would not leave him behind and he was carried out on an improvised stretcher. He bore up bravely... Dave fought hard to the last but died the next day and was buried by our Padre, Major R.O. Wilkes...." (Source: Canadian Jews in World War II.)
