- OBITUARIES: Evening Times Globe, August 20, 1983, Page 12 microfilm # 287 M. J. Brym – Montreal The death of M. J. Brym of Montreal and formerly of 109 Germain Street, Saint John, husband of the late Sarah (Goldberg) Brym, occurred on Thursday after a brief illness at the Jewish General Hospital in Montreal. Born in Poland, he was son of the late Haim and Bylah (Popial) Shalom Brym. He lived most of his life in Saint John. He was in the clothing manufacturing industry. He was a member of the Congregation Sharrei Zedek and was very active in Synagogue affairs. He is survived by two cousins, nieces and nephews. The body is resting at Castle Funeral Home (Hillsley), 91 Leinster Street from where the funeral will be held Sunday with service at 10 am. Interment in the Shaarei Zedek Cemetery. - OBITUARIES: Telegraph Journal, March 23, 2002 The death of Mrs. Ruth (Gruber) Goldberg, wife of the late Abraham Goldberg, of Saint John, NB, occurred on Thursday, March 21, 2002 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born in Montreal, she was the daughter of the late Max and Fanny (Sofin) Gruber. She was a member of the Shaarei Zedek Synagogue and was Jewish by faith. She is survived by one daughter, Candace Goldberg of Saint John, one sister, Betty (Lewis) Silver of Montreal, one step-son, Dr. Benjamin (Judith) Goldberg of London, ON, on grandson, Hank Goldberg of saint John, and four step-grandchildren; Dr. Joel (Ilana) Goldberg, Mark (Susan) Goldberg, Brian (Jody) Goldberg, Adele (Andy) Pascoe, and 13 step-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents and her husband, Abraham. The funeral service will be held on Sunday, March 24, 2002 at 2:00 PM from Brenan’s Select Community Funeral Home Chapel, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB, (506) 634-7424. - OBITUARIES: Saint John Times Globe, March 6, 2001 Goldstein, Samuel D.- The death of Mr. Samuel D. Goldstein, husband of Lillian P. (Meltzer) Goldstein, of Paradise Row, Saint John, NB, occurred on Monday, March 5, 2001, at his residence after a lengthy illness. Born in Montreal, Quebec, he was the son of the late Abraham and Sarah (Cramer) Goldstein. For many years, Samuel had worked for many different local businesses as an electrician. In 1961, he started his own company, Central Electric. He also was responsible for training many electrical apprentices in his younger years. Mr. Goldstein was a member of the Canadian Jewish War Veterans Association, and was also a member of the Shaarei Zedek Synagogue. He enjoyed the horse races, and always had a kind word to say about everyone. He is survived by his wife, Lillian, one daughter, Miriam (Bob) Reder of Calgary, AB, one son, Arthur of Thailand, two grandsons, Jonathan and Marc Reder, both of Calgary, AB, two sisters, Yetta of California and Frances of Calgary, AB, several nieces and nephews and several great nieces and great nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Harry Goldstein. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, March 7, 2001 at 3:30 p.m., from Brenan’s Select Community Funeral Home Chapel, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB, (506) 634-7424). Interment will take place at Shaarei Zedek Cemetery. Remembrances may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association. Active pallbearers were Phil Bloom, Billy Koven, Matthew Koven, Dave Elman, Stewart Urdang, Daniel Levine, Ben Smith, and Bruce Washburn. The family received many remembrances to the Canadian Diabetes Association; Heart and Stroke Foundation of New Brunswick; and the Canadian Cancer Society. Floral tributes were received. - Section Officer Rose Goodman of New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, was reported killed accidentally (R.C.A.F. Casualty List No. 487), when the Crane training plane in which she was flying from Lethbridge crashed near Claresholm, Alberta. She was the first member of the Women’s Division of the Royal Canadian Air Force to lose her life on active service. Section Officer Goodman enlisted in the R.C.A.F. in October 1941 and received her preliminary training in Toronto, where she was a member of the first glass to graduate from the Administrative Training Course. After serving as sergeant instructress at Moncton, New Brunswick, she was commissioned and was posted to Alberta as adjutant. The New Glasgow News wrote of her passing: “...She made her choice; she has given her life for her country. “She served—and died—that men may fly. “That we may win this war.”

- Sergeant Abie Kirsch of Montreal, Quebec, was killed in an air crash at St. Martin, Quebec. He was one of four airmen who lost their lives when their Hudson bomber, flying off course and fighting fire and a wind-driven sleety rainstorm, crashed and explored on a farm at St. Martin, a few miles outside Montreal. Enlisting in the air force as a wireless gunner in November 1940, Sergeant Kirsch graduated with the rank of sergeant at Macdonald, Manitoba, in July 1941. A brother, Norman, also served with the R.C.A.F.

He was in a Cessna training plane on a navigational cross-country flight from No. 4 Service Flying Training School at Saskatoon when it crashed near Shellbrook, Saskatchewan, one hundreds miles north of Saskatoon. Major S.G. Levi, M.B.E., officiated over the funeral rites. Leading Aircraftman Kugelmass enlisted in the air force in August 1940.

- Sergeant Sam Levine of Montreal, Quebec, who had been listed missing, was reported killed in an air crash (R.C.A.F. Casualty List No. 271) on May 22, 1942. While a student pilot at No. 9 Service Flying Training School at Summerside, Prince Edward Island, he was the lone occupant of a Harvard trainer which crashed off the south coast of P.E.I. on November 18, 1941. His body was brought to Montreal for burial. Maj. S. Gershon Levi, M.B.E., Senior Jewish Chaplain, officiated. Sergeant Levine enlisted in the air force at Montreal in February 1941. He trained at Toronto, Oshawa, Victoriaville and Chatham before he was transferred to Summerside. A brother, Flying Officer Thomas C. Levine, also served with the R.C.A.F.
