Notes
Squadron Leader Phil Herbert Foster (Fenster), R.A.F., of Flin Flon, Manitoba, was reported killed in action over Norway in May 1942. The City of Flin Flon paid tribute to him in a memorial service in the Northminster United Church and later established Foster Park in his honour. Immediately upon the outbreak of war, Squadron Leader Foster enlisted in the R.C.A.F. under the British Commonwealth Training Plan, the first Manitoba man to do so. Finding the procedure too slow for his liking, he resigned from the air force and proceeded to England at his own expense, where he joined the R.A.F. He participated in the Battle of Britain and had a number of planes to his credit before he was shot down and suffered a broken back. After his recovery as served a time as an instructor and later went into active service once more. For a while overseas he was associated with the R.C.A.F., serving with a Blenheim squadron.
