- OBITUARIES: Telegraph Journal, April 14, 1972 Samuel A. Babb Dies in Halifax A prominent and highly respected member of the Saint John Jewish Community, Samuel A. Babb, died unexpectedly Wednesday in Victoria General Hospital in Halifax. Born in Saint John, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Babb, he received his early education in the city, before going to the Pratt Institute in New York City, where he studied commercial art, which he also studied at New York University. For 20 years, Mr. Babb operated a commercial art and sign business in New York, before returning to Saint John in 1944 to join the Franklin and Herschorn Theatre Company. He moved to Halifax about a year and a half ago, and has been living in the Nova Scotia capital since that time. In 1961, he was the guest of honor at the Eighth Annual Negev Dinner, sponsored by Ezra Lodge No. 7, Zionist Men’s Association for the Jewish National Fund of Canada, and in 1970 was the guest of honor at the annual State of Israel Bond Dinner. The Saint John Jewish Community had undertaken the reclamation of 125 acres of land in the Negev Desert area of Israel, and contributions made at the Negev Dinner were used to establish a portion of this land in the name of each honored guest whose name is inscribed on a plaque located in the reclamation area. The area is being planted with trees, to be called the Canada Forest. While in Saint John, Mr. Babb served as local chairman and national executive member of the Jewish National Fund of Canada, and was a charter member and past vice-president of Saint John Lodge No. 1963, B’nai B’rith. He was a member of the Saint John Art Club, the industrial development committee of the former City of Lancaster, and was a director of the Maritime Motion Pictures Exhibitors Association. A 'Free Student Loan Fund' was established in the name of his only son, to aid students at the Institute of technology in Haifa, Israel. He was also Saint John chairman and National executive member of the Jewish National Fund of Canada, and local chairman of the Israel-Maritime League. He served as eastern Canadian vice-president of the national fund in 1967. He also served as president of the fund, and of the Atlantic Region Zionist Organization of Canada. He was former executive member and treasurer of the New Brunswick Museum, was active in the affairs of the New Brunswick Protestant Orphans Home, a member of the Saint John Board of Trade and worked with the Red Feather Campaign and the United Fund of Greater Saint John. Mr. Babb was also active in curling and golf in the city. Babb, Samuel A. In June, 1970, Mr. Babb was elected to the executive of the Jewish National Fund of Canada. Besides his wife, Lillian (Franklin) Babb, Mr. Babb is survived by one son, Franklin Lewis, of Saint John; four sisters, Mrs. Mary Meizger of Miami Beach, Fla., Mrs. Saul Bronstien and Mrs. William Gasoi, both of Montreal, and Mrs. Irving Geller of New York City; two brothers, Joseph of Hollywood Fla., and Buddy of Long Island, N.Y., several nephews and nieces. The body is resting at the Calvin Funeral Home, (Hillsley) 91 Leinster Street, from where the funeral will be held Sunday at 6:00 p.m. Interment will take place in Shaarei Zedek Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to the charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family. (Original article included photograph) Gravestone reference code(s): JM 998.61.24. - Moses Greenblatt, of Montreal, Quebec, was one of two Jewish sailors east of the Manitoba-Ontario border in the Canadian navy during World War II. He was the radioman on a high-speed corvette ship, the H.M.C.S. Spikenard. (A high-speed corvette ship protected ships carrying troops to Europe by positioning itself between a torpedo and a troop-carrying ship.) After delivering a troop-carrying ship to Europe, the corvette was returning to Canada when a torpedo hit the H.M.C.S. Spikenard. Telegraphist Moses Greenblatt locked himself in the radio room and sent out the SOS giving the ship's position at sea. The captain and first mate took guns and ordered the rest of the crew into the freezing Atlantic waters. After the sailors complained that they would die in the water, the crew were told that they would live only three minutes on the corvette but would survive thirty minutes in the water. The few sailors who survived recounted the episode and the heroic action of Moses Greenblatt. Telegraphist Greenblatt enlisted in the navy at Montreal in August 1940 and after training at Halifax was posted aboard the ill-fated Spikenard. He saw service in Newfoundland and Iceland and was awarded the Naval Silver Cross posthumously by Canada.
