- Flight Sergeant Hyman Baum, R.C.A.F., of Montreal, Quebec, was reported killed in active service in Canada (R.C.A.F. Casualty List No. 304) on June 20, 1942. While on a patrol flight the plane he was in was seen to crash into the sea off Digby Island in northern British Columbia. The aircraft disappeared almost immediately after it struck the water, trapping both Baum and the pilot. Enlisting in the air force in November 1940, Flight Sergeant Baum trained at Brandon, Calgary and Fingal, Ontario, where he graduated as a sergeant wireless air gunner. He was posted to the operational training unit at Debert, Nova Scotia, and then to the R.A.F. Ferry Command at Dorval. Upon Japan’s entry into the war, he was withdrawn from the R.A.F.F.C. and posted to No. 7 Bomber Reconnaissance Squadron at Prince Rupert, British Columbia, for operational aircrew duties.

- Leading Aircraftman Norman Kendall of Toronto, Ontario, was killed along with another student flyer when the Harvard training plane in which they were flying failed to come out of a nose dive. The plane crashed into a barn three miles southeast of Tillsonburg, Ontario. Leading Aircraftman Kendall enlisted in the air force in July 1941 and was stationed at Eglinton, North Bay and Aylmer, Ontario.

- Flight Sergeant Harry Levine, of Bridgeport, Connecticut, was killed in an air crash near Englehart, Ontario, on July 4, 1942, while serving with the ferry command on a flight between North Bay and Kapuskasing, Ontario. He joined the air force in Ottawa in August 1941 and trained at Valcartier, Victoriaville, Stanley, Moncton and Rockcliffe. A brother, Sergeant Max Levine, served with the American army.

- Leading Aircraftman Daniel Levy, R.C.A.F., of Toronto, was killed when the twin-engine aircraft in which he was flying crashed into the Ptolemy mountain, ten miles southwest of Coleman, Alberta, on January 19, 1946. He was buried in Toronto. Leading Aircraftman Levy had served as a ground radio technician since his enlistment in 1943. Prior to his enlistment he was a professional musician. A brother, Paul Levy, also served in the R.C.A.F.

- Leading Aircraftman Morris Oiring of Montreal, Quebec, who was reported missing on active service, was presumed dead for official purposes on December 24, 1943 (R.C.A.F. Casualty List No. 762). Leading Aircraftman Oiring was returning to his base when the steamer S.S. Caribou was torpedoed by a submarine near Port aux Basques, Newfoundland, on October 14, 1942. Enlisting in the air force on December 15, 1941, Leading Aircraftman Oiring was rejected for air crew duties on medical grounds. He trained at Toronto, Trenton, Halifax and Debert and was stationed at Newfoundland as a security guard when he was reported missing. He had been stationed in Newfoundland since June 13, 1942. He was born in Mogilev-Podolsk, Russia.

- Leading Aircraftman Lionel Roher of Toronto, Ontario, was killed in an airplane crash on June 28, 1941, a fortnight before he was scheduled to receive his wings. He was stationed at No. 1 Service Flying Training School at Dauphin, Manitoba, and was practicing forced landings in a Harvard aircraft when he crashed 45 miles northeast of the school. The aircraft struck the ground with great force, and Leading Aircraftman Roher was killed instantly. His flight commander called him “the best student we had in the class,” and his instructor said, “…He was by far my best pupil and seemed equally good in aerobatics and instrument flying. He was very quick to learn and very eager and enthusiastic.” Leading Aircraftman Roher enlisted in the air force on September 26, 1940, and trained at Brandon, Regina, in British Columbia, and at Dauphin. A brother, Sergeant Martin Roher, also served in the R.C.A.F.

- Pilot Officer Abraham Albert Schwartz of Ottawa, Ontario, was reported killed on active service (R.C.A.F. Casualty List No. 654). He died in an Ottawa hospital of injuries sustained when the airplane which he was flying as instructor crashed into a tree ten miles east of Kemptville, Ontario, on August 10, 1943. Enlisting in the air force in January 1940, Pikot Officer Schwartz served for a time with the equipment branch of the R.C.A.F. before remustering to air crew. He trained at St. Thomas, Winnipeg, Uplands, Rockcliffe and Belleville, before going to St. Hubert, where he receive his pilot’s wings and commission on November 19, 1942. At the time of his death, he was instructor at the Uplands R.C.A.F. Station. Honours and awards: Defence Medal; CVSM; War Medal 1939-45. (From “There I Was ...
