Shel Yad: Black painted box on a flat, square, base. The base is made of multiple layers that have been stitched together. A leather strap passes through a leather loop on the reverse of the base, which allows the strap to be looped into itself and adjusted for size. A cardboard container fits over the box. Narrative: Tefillin belonged to Sheftel Albin, the donor's grandfather.

OBITUARIES: Telegraph Journal, July 25, 1942 [Telegraph Journal / Evening Times Globe] Nathan Holtzman Passes Suddenly A wide circle of friends will learn with regret of the sudden death yesterday in Saint John Regional Hospital of Nathan Holtzman of 182 Prince Edward Street. Mr. Holtzman was born in Poland, son of the late Harry and Rachel Holtzman of Poland but has been a resident of Saint John for more than 45 years. He was well known and highly esteemed. Of a jovial nature, he will be missed by a great many friends. He was one of he oldest members of the Shaarei Zedek Congregation and was active in all work connected to the synagogue. Besides his wife he is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Nathan Liphshetz, Fredericton; Miss Ethel of New York, and Miss Ada at home; four sons, Abe and Jack of New York City and Harry and Morris of Saint John and also four grandchildren. The body is resting at Chamberlain’s Funeral Home, 145 King Street East from where the funeral will be held on Sunday morning at 11 o’clock. Interment will be made in the Hebrew lot in Fernhill Cemetery. Gravestone reference code(s): JM 998.61.245. Memorial plaque in synagogue: Nathan and Mary Meltzer - E3. Funeral from his late residence, 85 Summer Street, this (Monday) afternoon at 2 o’clock. Interment at Fernhill Cemetery. The Evening Times Globe Monday, May 11, 1936, page 7 Jacob Warson Dies At Residence Here Following an illness of six months, Jacob Warson died at his residence, 85 Summer Street, at 9 p.m. on Saturday and his death had brought deep sorrow to many friends. Mr. Warson was born in Warsaw, Poland, and had resided in Saint John for the last 30 years. He had won the respect and esteem of all with whom he was associated. Mr. Warson was a member of the Shaarei Zedek congregation of the Hebrew community and had been successfully engaged as manufacturer’s agent. He is survived by three sons, Maurice and Harry of this city and Dr. Samuel Warson of Providence, R.I., who left for here to attend his father’s funeral; two daughters, Mrs. P. Mellman of Los Angeles and Mrs. I. Dubinsky of Toronto; two sisters, Mrs. Rachael Gutin of Warsaw, Poland and Mrs. Dora Warshaw of Toronto and several grandchildren and nephews and nieces. The funeral was held this afternoon at 2 o’clock from his late residence, Summer Street. The service was conducted by Rabbi M. Beshkin and interment was made in Fernhill cemetery. OBITUARIES: Evening Times Globe, October 27, 1989 Jacob (Jack) Cohen of Loch Lomond Villa, husband of the late Alice (Kunitzky) Cohen, died at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Thursday. He was 102. Born in Poland, he was the son of the late Samuel and Rachel Cohen. He has been a resident of Saint John since 1910 and as a ladies' clothing manufacturer. He owned and operated Imperial Cloak and Glamour Garment Company. He was a member of the congregation Shaarei Zedek. His son Joseph Cohen, died in 1987. He is survived by two sons, Samuel Cohen of Saint John and Hyman Cohen of Winthrop Mass; one sister, Pesha Zuckerman of Israel; four grandchildren; three grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. The body is resting at Castle Funeral Home (Hillsley), 91 Leinster Street, from where the funeral will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. Interment at the Shaarei Zedek Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society of Hadassah WIZO by calling Josie Lesser at 847-9379 would be appreciated. Round. Opening at top. Flowers on back. Narrative: Made in Lutsk Ukraine by Rachel Goldberg. It was an engagement gift to her husband, Jacob Prezament. The bag was made in 1902. Jacob brought it to Winnepeg in 1914. He used it every day of his life, until he passed away 1959.
