OBITUARIES: Saint John Globe, March 14, 1909 Mr. Isaacs died Sunday at his home 12 Peters Street after a brief illness. He died of heart failure. He was born in London, England. Spent his young manhood in New York. In 1878 came to Saint John and went into manufacturing cigars on Dock Street. The following year he was joined by his brother and they formed a partnership which prospered and is now of the big industries of Saint John. Mr. Isaacs was married in New York to the daughter of the late Solomon Hart. He is survived by two sons, 2 daughters, 4 brothers, Israel, Alfred, Joseph and Emmanuel and two sisters, Mrs. Oscar Silberstein and Mrs. L. Marks. Mr. Isaacs has been the President of the Jewish Congregation since its establishment. In his death the Jewish colony has lost its foremost member and the community a man who filled a very important place in its world. He enjoyed good will and esteem by all who knew him. Typescript supplied by: Archives Department of Canadian History The New Brunswick Museum 277 Douglas Avenue Saint John N.B. Date: May 16, 1972 [The Jewish Times] March 1909 The Late Mr. Abraham Isaacs Saint John N.B. The death of Mr. Abraham Isaacs of the firm of A. & I. Isaacs, cigar manufacturers of Saint John, N.B., which occurred quite suddenly at his residence, 12 Peters Street on Sunday, March 14 last, was a shock and a loss not only to Mr. Isaacs own family, but to the entire business community. The deceased, who had been suffering from heart trouble for some time part, was stricken suddenly ill two weeks previous to his death, and gradually grew weaker until the end. Mr. Isaacs, who was a native of London, England, came to New York when quite a young lad, and began his career as a cigarmaker, learning the trade with his father, who was then engaged in the manufacturing business. Shortly afterwards Mr. Isaacs opened up business for himself in Brooklyn at the corner of Myrtle Avenue. Here he prospered and settled down, marrying a daughter of the late Solomon Hart, of Saint John. In 1878 Mr. Isaacs removed his family to Saint John, and began cigar manufacturing on Dock Street. Then, a year later, he was joined by his brother, Mr. Isaacs, and together they established the firm of A&I. Isaacs. After a few years of active business they found their factory inadequate for their ever growing trade, and were forced to remove to larger quarters on Church Street, where they continued business for some years until three years ago, when they purchased the fine brick building on Princess Street, which the firm now occupies. The firm of A&I Isaacs is one of the oldest established and best known firms in the Maritime Provinces, ranking amongst the largest cigar manufacturers in Canada. Great sympathy had been extended to the members of Mr. Isaacs family, as well as his brother, Mr. I. Isaacs, at his loss of a lifelong partner. The business will still be continued by Mr. I. Isaacs under the [?] name. Gravestone reference code(s): JM 998.61.502.

OBITUARIES: Saint John Globe, August 19, 1924 Israel Isaacs Died This Morning Aged 74 Years-Retired from Business About 7 Years Ago Israel Isaacs, one of Saint John’s pioneer citizens and business men died at 7:50 o’clock this morning, in his 75th year of age, He was born in London, England, on December 1, 1849. At the early age of seven years he emigrated with his parents to the United States, where he remained for 25 years. In 1881 he came to Saint John where he joined his brother, the late Abraham Isaacs, and together they formed the firm of A and I Isaacs, which they developed into one of the largest cigar and cigarette factories in Canada. Mr. Isaacs was forced to retire about seven years ago on account of ill-health. On September 5, 1883, Mr. Isaacs married Caroline Hart, daughter of the late Solomon and Alice Hart of this city. He is survived by his loving wife Caroline; two sisters, Mrs. L. Marks, and Mrs. J. Metzger, both of Brooklyn N.Y.; three daughters, Mrs. Maurice Abrahamson, of Brookline, Mass., and Sylvia and Ruby, at home, and one son, A. Hart, also at home. Mr. Isaacs was generally well liked. He and his brother were very active in the founding of the first Hebrew Synagogue here, and he took a great interest in its development. He was very charitable, especially during the war, but he carried on his good work unostentatiously. In politics he was an independent voter, favouring the man rather than the party. Mr. Isaac’s death took place on the 35th anniversary of the dearth of his father, who also died at the same age, 74 years. The funeral will be held Thursday afternoon from his late residence 23 Coburg Street to the Green-Hart Cemetery, Fernhill. Saint John Globe Thursday, August 21, 1924 Local News: Buried Today The funeral of Israel Isaacs was held at 2:30 this afternoon from his late residence, 23 Coburg Street. Services were conducted by Rev. A. Babb and interment was in the Greenhart cemetery, Fernhill. A very large number of floral tributes was received. Gravestone reference code(s): JM 998.61.491. OBITUARIES: Saint John Globe, October 15, 1913, Page 9 Died in Hospital The death of Mrs. Jacob Mayer, aged 62 years, occurred at the General Public Hospital on the 14 inst. Mrs. Mayer had not been in the best of health for some time, and Dr. W. W. Ferrin, of Boston, a prominent Boston physician and a personal friend of the Mayer family, was sent for. After a consultation with Dr. Emery, who was locally in charge of the case, an operation was decided upon. Dr. Gareau, of Montreal, who a few months ago operated successfully on the Duchess of Connaught, was called here. On Saturday afternoon last, at 5 o’clock, Dr. Gareau, assisted by Dr. Ferrin and Emery, performed the operation. The operation was considered a success, and Mrs. Mayer was considerably improved for a while; however, complications set in and she succumbed to the disease early on Tuesday morning. Mrs. Mayer, who was of Jewish persuasion, was an extremely charitable and beloved lady, and performed very many acts of charity among her own people, and will be greatly missed, not only by the members of the Jewish church, but by a large number of personal friends and friends of the family. A large number of telegrams of sympathy were received from out of town friends, and a great many floral tributes were sent the former home of the deceased, testifying to the esteem in which the deceased was held. Mrs. Mayer is survived by a sorrowing husband, also by three sons and two daughters. The sons are Messers. Louis B Mayer, of Boston, who is extensively engaged in the theatrical business in Haverhill, Boston, Lawrence and Philadelphia; R. W. Mayer of Quebec and St. John, and Jerry G. Mayer, of Quebec. The daughters are Mrs. L. S. Kominsky, of this city, and Mrs. Reider, of Montreal. All the members of the family were at the bedside of their mother at the time of her death. The funeral, which was of strictly private nature, was held on Tuesday evening and interment took place in the Jewish cemetery. Gravestone reference code(s): JM 998.61.277.
