Private Samuel Berger of Windsor, Ontario, was officially reported killed in action at Dieppe on August 19, 1942. He enlisted in the army in June 1940 and after training at Camp Borden, Ontario, was sent overseas in February 1941. While in England, he was transferred to the battalion headquarters, intelligence section. In March 1942 he underwent commando training. Private Berger was born in Poland.

Private Louis Goldin of Montreal, Quebec, was killed in action at Dieppe on August 19, 1942, according to an official report. Priivate Goldin joined Les Fusiliers Mont-Royal in September 1939. He was stationed at Valcartier until 1940, when he was sent to Iceland. He proceeded to England in 1941 and served as a truck driver. A witness to Private Goldin's heroism was Capt. Antoine Masson, M.C., his commanding officer. Capt. Masson reported that Private Goldin remained at his machine gun post to the very last, in the face of heavy Nazi attack. The London, Ontario, Catholic Register mentioned Private Goldin in its report of December 26, 1942.

Sergeant Morris Greenberg of Toronto, Ontario, was killed in action at Dieppe according to an official report. Sergeant Greenberg enlisted on the second day of the war and was with the first Canadians sent to Iceland in June 1940. Later, he proceeded to Aldershot, England, and as corporal, instructed newly arrived men and Home Guard units in the use of small arms. Then he was sent as a battle instructor to Roland Castle, near Portsmouth, and later he was recalled to his battalion and participated in the Dieppe attack. Frederick Griffin, war correspondent for the Toronto Star, wrote of Sergeant Greenberg: “During the Dieppe raid, Sergeant Morris Greenberg... won the praise of his officers and fellow soldiers after he helped many wounded companions safely back from battle under intense fire.” A brother, Sergeant Irving Greenberg, served overseas with the 48th Highlanders and later with an anti-aircraft unit which downed a number of German planes.

Private Morris Lozdon of Toronto, Ontario, was reported killed in action at Dieppe. Private Lozdon enlisted in the army in March 1941 and went overseas in August of the same year. He took commando training and participated in the raids on Boulogne and Dieppe. He helped to capture a number of German officers during the first raid. In a letter home, he wrote: “... We are going to work hard and take another crack at the enemy soon. I got two automatic pistols from two German officers on our last raid. Next time, I hope to bring back something important. Some day soon we shall see each other again, please God!”

Flying Officer Harry Sager of Montreal, Quebec, who was reported missing on June 13, 1944, was presumed dead for official purposes in July 1945. His Lancaster bomber, damaged by enemy action, crashed over Varengeville-sur-Mer near Longueil, France, while returning from a mission. Flying Officer Sager enlisted in the air force in May 1942 and trained at Lachine, Quebec, and Belleview, Ontario. He received his navigator’s wings and commission at St. John’s, Quebec, in June 1943 and went overseas in July. He participated in many missions over enemy territory, including the D-Day offensive. There is a Star of David on his tombstone (Source: Veterans Affairs Canada web site)
