- Leading Aircraftman Lionel Roher of Toronto, Ontario, was killed in an airplane crash on June 28, 1941, a fortnight before he was scheduled to receive his wings. He was stationed at No. 1 Service Flying Training School at Dauphin, Manitoba, and was practicing forced landings in a Harvard aircraft when he crashed 45 miles northeast of the school. The aircraft struck the ground with great force, and Leading Aircraftman Roher was killed instantly. His flight commander called him “the best student we had in the class,” and his instructor said, “…He was by far my best pupil and seemed equally good in aerobatics and instrument flying. He was very quick to learn and very eager and enthusiastic.” Leading Aircraftman Roher enlisted in the air force on September 26, 1940, and trained at Brandon, Regina, in British Columbia, and at Dauphin. A brother, Sergeant Martin Roher, also served in the R.C.A.F.
