- Warrant Officer Syd Cohen of Winnipeg, Manitoba, died in the St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg following an accident at No. 7 Bombing and Gunnery School at Paulson, Manitoba. He joined the air force soon after the outbreak of war. He trained at Portage la Prairie and Toronto and received his wings at Rockcliffe. He served as a pilot at various stations in Manitoba and was posted to Paulson in 1942 as a staff pilot.

- Dr. Louis Slotin of Winnipeg, Manitoba, died as a result of exposure to radiation while engaged in the development of the atomic bomb at the Los Alamos, New Mexico, laboratory of the United States War Department. Dr. Slotin began work on the Manhattan Project in 1942. After December 1944, he gave his full time to atomic research at the Clinton Laboratories at Oak Ridge, Tennessee. He was key man in the construction of the cyclotron at Los Alamos. He attended all experiments made in the New Mexico desert and was scheduled to attend the atomic bomb tests at Bikini Atoll in the Pacific Ocean in the summer of 1946.
