History Biographical
Abraham Lieff was born March 5, 1903 in Antopol, Poland and arrived in Canada with his mother, Esther Malka Pomerantz (changed to Palmer) Lieff towards the end of 1904. His father, Bernard Lieff, had arrived in 1903. Honourable Mr. Lieff was called to the Ontario Bar in 1926. He served as magistrate from 1937 to 1945 and was named King’s Counsel in 1948. He was appointed Justice of the Supreme Court of Ontario - the first such Jewish appointment in the Province - in 1963. He retired from this post in 1978. “Abe” as he is affectionately called, has a long standing association with both Ottawa and the larger Canadian Jewish communities. In 1943 in Ottawa, he was elected President of Ottawa B’nai B’rith. In 1946 he became President of the Agudath Israel Congregation, serving in that capacity for seventeen years, and from 1953-1955, he was President of the Ottawa Vaad Ha’Ir. In 1978, the Negev Testimonial Dinner honoured him. Honourable Lieff married the late Sadie Lazarovitz, BCL of Quebec City. They first met at a Young Judaea Convention held in Ottawa in 1925. They had two girls, Miriam and Lois. Honourable Lieff’s “hundred years of a wonderful life” was celebrated at Beth Tzedec Synagogue in Toronto on March 8-9, 2003.
