History Biographical
Hyman Gould (1905-1995) was born in Ottawa, son of Abraham Gould and Annie Horowitz. He married Lilian Levine, daughter of Moses and Rebecca Levine on December 31, 1928. They had one son, Ron Gould. Hyman Gould was active in Jewish community affairs in Ottawa. He became involved in the administration of Adath Jeshurun Synagogue within two years of joining in 1928 and served as president between 1948 and 1952. He was a key figure in the formation of Beth Shalom and he served as president of the new synagogue from 1965 to 1968. In 1952 he became president of the Vaad and served a two year term. He was in the forefront of the development and maintenance of the Jewish Community Cemetery and the New Jewish community cemetery covering a period of 30 years, 17 of those years as chairman. He stepped down in 1986. He also served on the Ottawa Welfare Council, being president for three years. His service to the community was recognized in 1982 when he received the Gilbert Greenberg Distinguished Service Award which is the highest in the Jewish community. He operated, along with his brother Victor, Goulds Camera Shop, 83 Bank Street, Ottawa. They opened on February 6th, 1928 and operated the store from the same location for 50 years. In 1978 the business was sold to Black’s. Lilian Gould attended Teacher’s College, Lisgar Street. She graduated with honours and taught at the York Street Public School. She also attended a summer school at Hunter College, Columbia University, New York City and specialized in a pre-school program. Lilian Gould founded the Joan of Arc Pre-School, Ottawa in 1937 and it operated for 9 years.

No restrictions on access. 2. Two Masonic memberships, 1929,1930 and one photographic portrait of Moses Levine, drawn over with chalk (salted paper, crayon enlargement), (see - 1-973-01 - 03). Portrait is in Oversized Document Box 1, Mason's certificates are in Box 4. 3. Business history related by Ron Gould to Dawn Logan, winter, 2007. Hy Gould acquired his camera and photography knowledge by working in Mr. Gervais’s photograph shop on Rideau Street near the old train station. Hy Gould established his first camera shop at 83 Bank Street in 1929, along with his brother Victor and Lil Gould (Berg) as partners. He always maintained that store. 4. Then Victor Gould opened his own camera shop on Sparks Street while Hy and Lilian remained at 83 Bank Street. Hy Gould always had a strong desire to open a shop at the former premises of Gervais. He was able to, and Lil ran the Rideau location until she went to New York and the store was sold. 5. Hy asks Victor to join him on Bank Street in 1960. They sold to Blacks in 1978. 6. On a recreational note, the Leon Petegorsky family shared the summer property at Lac Robinson in Quebec. 7. An article on the history of the store was written for Facebook in September, 2013: "Gould's Camera and Art Shop, 83 Bank St. - 1928-1978 In 1912, at the age of 7, Hy Gould suddenly found himself the man of his household after the very unfortunate death of his father. Even at such a young age, he realized that he would need to find work to help support his mother and siblings. Hi prospects somewhat limited, luck had it that one of the first jobs he managed to find was as a messenger boy for a man named Sam Jarvis, the owner of a photography store on Rideau St. at the time called Pittaway Jarvis Ltd. Over the many years that followed, Hy discovered a great love of photography. He began to work his way up within Sam's store until the day he was made manager. In 1928 though, at the age of 23, Hy decided to strike out on his own and set up shop at the very top of Bank at Queen St, opening Gould's Camera and Art Shop. He was joined by his brother Victor and together they ran an incredibly successful establishment. So successful in fact, that the shop was the regular place of business of internationally renowned Ottawa photographer Yousuf Karsh, who had his own studio just around the block on Sparks Street. Every article written about the pair remarked on their devotion to their customers, their friendly natures and their love for their communities - both Jewish and neighbouring. At their peak, the brothers had three stores within the city, but the Bank Street location was the only one to survive the remodeling of the downtown. In 1978, three months after their 50th anniversary, Hy and Victor decided to sell the store and the business was bought by Black's Photography. Today the store has been split into two and houses a Sooter's photography store and a Laura Secord chocolate store."
