History Biographical
The Ottawa Jewish Community Endowment and Bequest Foundation was formed in 1971 to provide a financial resource to maintain the fiscal structure of the community and at the same time to perpetuate the name of a person, persons or a family. The Foundation began to function in 1974. The name changed in 1982 to the Ottawa Jewish Community Foundation. In 1995, Orly Buzelan was hired as the Foundation's first Executive Director taking over from Casey Swedlove who served in a volunteer capacity. Alex Betcherman, Hy Joseph Harris, David Loeb, Samuel Taller, Hy Bessin, Norman Zagerman, Gilbert Greenberg, Joseph Harold Shenkman, Abraham Palmer, Bernard Shinder and Hy Soloway were the original applicants for the charter and were the first directors. Gilbert Greenberg was the first president. In the spring of 1996, the Foundation Board adoped a mission statement and soon an Audit/Finance Committee was established along with policy guidelines for gift planning and investment. The first endowment was $100,000 from the late Michael Freedman, followed by Harold Shenkman, Harold Flagal, Philip Cohen, David Zbar, Louis Greenberg and Mrs. Bess (Moe) Greenberg. The Ottawa Jewish Community Endowment Campaign is a partnership of the Foundation and the Jewish Community Council of Ottawa. The goal of the M'Dor L’Dor Campaign was to realize $40 million for Ottawa Jewish culture, the elderly, education and the needy. Marty Davis was the Director of the 2004-2005 campaign. Jack Silverstein served as UJA Executive Director (2005 - 2010). In 2011, Rony Podolsky became the Director of the Annual Campaign.
