History Biographical
Ottawa Modern Jewish School opened on October 5, 1953 for Grade I and Sunday School. Elmvale and Osgoode Public Schools were engaged initially for classroom facilities. Subsequently the Sunday School moved to First Avenue. Grades I and II were added as a combined grade in 1955. Grades were gradually added up to grade seven. The first years had a high drop-out rate and a small number of graduates.
The aim of the school is to provide a liberal Jewish education which will equip the child with a sound knowledge of his Jewish identity and heritage. The school, by its very nature, is not associated with any religious congregation. The school moved into the Soloway Jewish Community School in September 2010.
It is a cooperative afternoon school. A board and committees have the responsibility of running the school. Abe Palmer was the founding president of the board and Bertha Palmer was the founding president of the Ladies Auxiliary. Faigel (Phyllis) Rosenberg was involved in establishing OMJS and Bertha Leckie served as the school’s Registrar for many years.
