History / Biographical
Charles Levine (d. 1959, Ottawa) and his wife Helena (d. 1971 Ottawa) arrived in Ottawa in 1913 from Russia where Charles had served three years in the army. Shortly after their arrival, Helena gave birth to her oldest son Abraham (Abe) in the Ottawa Maternity Hospital. A second son, Peretz (Percy), was born in 1925. Charles apprenticed with Gerald Preston, a tailor on Rideau Street. Subsequently he opened his shop “Up Town” at 267 Rochester Street and the family lived upstairs. Charles Levine was an exceptional tailor, possessing the skill for making patterns and suits from patterns. Interested in current events, he always read both a Jewish newspaper and an Ottawa newspaper. He was a family man and assisted to Leon Gluzman's immigration. Helena Levine was a housewife and a supporter and member of Hadassah's Lillian Freiman Chapter, and the family attended services at B’nai Jacob synagogue. Abe Levine (1913-1994), was educated in Ottawa and attended Glebe Collegiate. In his youth, he was very involved in Jewish theatrical productions (see 1-951-01). He operated a business called Ideal Stationery on Rideau Street and married Tilly Greenberg. They had two sons, Harvey and Ron.
