History / Biographical
This fonds contains the records of a congregation which is composed of several merged synagogues. The fonds primarily concerns the records of: Shevet Achim D'bet Abraham, Chaverim Kol Yisrael, with some material from Chevra Shaas Adath Jeshurun Hadrath Kodesh.Shevet Achim's congregation held its first meeting in 1922 in a rented building on Cadieux Street. In 1925 the synagogue was named Shevet Achim, a name which was suggested by the congregations founder Solomon Scharf after his previous synagogue in New York. In 1928 the congregation arranged a free loan association. Two years later in 1930 a friend of the Solomon Scharf's, Abraham Raginsky, bought several buildings in the area which included the synagogue. Raginsky leased the building to the congregation free of charge and donated land for the cemetery. In his honor the synagogue was renamed Shevet Achim D'bet Abraham. In May of 1943 the congregation moves to a new location at 5340 Jeanne-Mance, where they stay for 7 years, after which they relocated to a duplex on Cote des Neiges where services began in 1952. In 1963 Shevet Achim's congregation merged with that of the Chaverim Kol Yisrael synagogue. Chaverim Kol Yisrael was established c.1924 and was originally located at Papineau, but had relocated to 6663 Cartier by 1936. The newly merged congregations of Shevet Achimd'bet Abraham and Chaverim Kol Yisrael became Shevet Achim Chaverim Kol Yisrael D'bet Abraham at the Cote des Neiges location. In 1965 the synagogue received a new façade, designed by Shapiro and Wolfe. In 1984 the synagogue closed down and the congregation affiliated with Chevra Shaas Adath Jeshurun Hadrath Kodesh, located on Lavoie Street. Chevra Shaas Adath Jeshurun Hadrath Kodesh was already an amalgamation of three synagogues Adath Jeshurun which was founded c.1908. It was originally located on St. Lawrence & Pine Ave. The original members were Lithuanian Jews. In 1916 the Adath Jeshurun moved to 4459 St. Urbain, a building which is now torn down. The congregation merged with Hadrath Kodeshin 1930.Hadrath Kodesh was established sometime in the 1920s, at 3929 St. Dominique, and their congregation was composed of Polish Jews. After the affiliation between Adath Jeshurun and Hadrath Kodesh a fire occurred in 1959, and the congregation adopted the name New Adath Jeshurun-Hadrath Kodesh, and moved to 5855 Lavoie in 1961. Around 1970 Adath Jeshurun Hadrath Kodesh combined with Chevra Shaas. The Chevra Shaas Adath Jeshurun Hadrath Kodesh Synagogue closed on Feb 26, 2006. The members moved their scrolls to the Spanish and Portuguese-Shearith Israel Synagogue, where they continue keeping their own service.
