History / Biographical
Dr. Nathan Schecter (Nachman ben Eliezer) was born in Montreal on September 4, 1911, and soon after his parents moved to Ottawa. As a child Dr. Schecter attended Bolton Public School and Lisgar Collegiate Institute. He had 6 siblings, including: Syd (b. January 28, 1917 - d. November 27, 2007) (m. Shirely Starker), Rebecca (m. Ben Gelman), Clara, Sadie, Ann and Jo. He married Tessie Miriam Bessin in June 1939 and together they raised three children, Corrine, Joel and Murray. At McGill University, Dr. Schecter earned a Bachelor of Science in 1932 and a graduate degree in medicine in 1936. This was at a time when few Jewish students were admitted to McGill University. He later completed Fellowships at the Royal College of Physicians of Canada, the American College of Physicians, the International College of Angiology, the Academy of Psychosomatic College and the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis. Dr. Schecter became interested in psychosomatic medicine early in his medical career. He demonstrated the use of hypnosis on a patient undergoing eye surgery on CBC in January 1959. During World War II he was a member of the Treatment Division of the Department of Veterans Affairs from January 1940 to April 1946. Later, as a teacher of medicine he reached the rank of Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Ottawa Medical School. In 1980, he received the Glenn Sawyer award of the Ontario Medical Association and in 1982 the Certificate of Merit of the Ottawa Civic Hospital for “42 years of dedicated service”. Upon his retirement in 1991, Dr. Schecter was honoured by the Riverside Hospital at a testimonial dinner for his long and distinguished service. He passed away at age 96 in Toronto on July 7, 2007. Within the Jewish community of Ottawa Dr. Nathan Schecter was for several years Chairman of all Adult Programming at the Jewish Community Centre. He then served as President of the Jewish Community Centre between 1974 and 1976. He was also a doctor under contract with the Ottawa Hebrew Benefit Society from 1939 to 1948.
