- History / Biographical
- Eve Kassirer (Eva Frankel) was born September 1, 1921 in Toronto Ontario. She received her Bachelor of Science in Agriculture specializing in Microbiology in 1944 from the Ontario Agricultural College. Upon graduation she became a Research Microbiologist with the National Research Council in Ottawa. Eve married Dr. Archie Kassirer and they had three children, including April Kassirer and Jay Kassirer. In 1963, after raising three children, she returned to Carleton University to pursue part-time studies in Sociology which led to full-time studies in 1966. She received a Province of Ontario Graduate Fellowship and worked as a discussion group leader. This formative work developed into various positions with Health Services Directorate of Health and Welfare Canada. She assisted with the creation of a number of task forces and edited Federal Government publications including "Guidelines for the Practice of Language and Speech Pathology and Audiology," "Childhood Hearing Impairment," and "Guidelines for the Certification of Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists in Canada." Eve was the founding Chair of the Canadian Toy Testing Council and was active in the National Council of Jewish Women. She helped to establish the library at Agudath Israel synagogue, was a Board member of Talmud Torah and participated in raising the standard of education at Hillel Academy. She was also a founding member of the Ottawa Modern Jewish School. Eve and Archie Kassirer were founding members of the Jewish Ethics and Philosophy Group in Ottawa. In 1952 she published "What's What for Children" which grew out of her work on the executive of the West End Nursery School. She was Secretary of the Ottawa Modern Jewish School in 1954. Eve passed away in April 1988 and Archie passed away in October 2010.
