History / Biographical
The family began with Isaac Gennis arriving in Canada in 1906 from Kishinev the capital of Bessarabia, Russia. After pioneering in Lipton, Saskatchewan for a few years, he came to Ottawa in the early 1910's. One by one, he brought his parents, brothers and sisters to this country and the majority made their way to Ottawa. They established a variety of small businesses in Ottawa including a tea room and a blacksmith shop. Melech Yitzhak Gennis and Leah Rivka Dragushansky had 8 children: Pearl (Koffman), Bertha (Greenberg), Harry, Clem, Morris, Sam, Isaac and Joe. Between them, they had many children with the Greenberg and Koffman families. A large Gennis - Koffman - Greenberg family reunion took place in Ottawa on Sunday, June 3, l988. People travelled from as far away as Denmark, Detroit, Chicago, New York City, Boca Raton and Toronto.

History / Biographical
Roger (d.1955) and Rose (d.1959) (nee Bezumny) were both born in Eastern Europe and immigrated separately to Canada in 1913. They met and married in 1915 and first lived on St. Andrew Street in the Lowertown district of Ottawa. Originally, Roger's surname was Nepomiazchy but the name was changed by immigration officials upon landing to the more pronounceable "Greenberg." Roger and Rose had seven children; George (b.1916 - d.1918) who died in an accident at Billings Bridge farm, Louis (b.1918 - d.1974), Jennie (b.1922- d.1991) (m. Israel Shinder), Gilbert (b.1923 -d.1980), Grace (b.1926 - d.1989), Irving (b.1928 - d.1991) and Lawrence (Lorry) (b.1933 - d.1999). The family's first few decades were steeped in poverty. In 1955, Roger and his sons started Mercury Homes, which later was changed to The Minto Group. Lawrence (Lorry) left the company in 1962. Louis Greenberg married Helen and they had a son, also named Lawrence (see Lawrence Greenberg fonds for more information). Jennie Greenberg married Israel Shinder and had two children, Eileen and Ruth. Lawrence (Lorry) Greenberg married Carol Gardner and had two children - Rhoda and Jeffery. Lorry became the first Jewish mayor of the City of Ottawa from 1975 to 1978. He died of heart failure in 1999 at age 65. Irving Greenberg died of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in 1991 at the age of 62. He and his wife Shirley had two children; Phoebe and Dan Greenberg. Gilbert and his wife Bessie Levitan had six children; Roger, Robert, Kenneth, Michael, Marion and Alan. Gilbert's son Roger graduated from Fisher Park High School in 1973, went to the University of Toronto for a Bachelors of Commerce and then earned his Law Degree from Osgoode Hall.
