History / Biographical
The North End Vilkomirer Hebrew Sick Benefit Association (or Society) was one of Montreal's many landsmanschaft associations. It was established in 1917 by Jews from Vilkomir, Lithuania, who had been exiled from their homes in 1915. Like most landsmanschaft, it raised money for local charities (and later, Israel) and supported its parent community (mainly through war relief). As well, the North End Wilkomirer H.S.B.A. provided burial plots and death benefits, insurance, and funds in case of sickness for its members.
