History / Biographical
Harold Rubin (b. February 21, 1911- d.1971) was born in Minsk, Russia, son of Zischa (Coplan) Rubin (b.1869 - d.1949) and Jacob Moses Rubin (b.1867 - d.1957). The family immigrated to Canada in 1912. Harold's father had booked passage for the family on the Titanic but they were turned away at the boarding ramp because Harold's brother David had fallen down a flight of stairs two days prior and was heavily bruised; the attendants turned the whole family away due to David's unsightly appearance. They booked passage on a smaller, much more squalid ship, but made safe passage. Harold attended Ottawa Collegiate Institute (now Lisgar Collegiate) and the High School of Commerce. He was a Scoutmaster with the 39th Scouts. He married Laura Finkelstein on September 25, 1932 and they had one daughter, Sorrell (Gwartzman). Harold became Camp B’nai B’rith’s first director in 1935 and was instrumental in establishing the camp based on his scouting experiences. At the beginning of World War II he enlisted in the Governor General’s Foot Guards where he trained soldiers and taught boxing as an amateur. In June 1943, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force. After completing training at St. Jean, Quebec, he was stationed in England during most of his military service and flew missions over Germany. He attained the rank of Flying Officer and received the Distinguished Flying Cross (D.F.C.) from the Governor-General in 1949. He returned to Ottawa and after some small business ventures in constructing houses with his brother, David Rubin, as well as operating a retail furniture business, he opened a paint and hardware store called Rubin’s Paint & Hardware Co. Ltd. in 1952. Harold Rubin started a diary during World War II and continued the habit during his active business years. The Ottawa Jewish Historical Society published these memoirs in 1992 under the title, "Those Pesky Weeds."

Notes
1. Sorrell Gwartzman related on a visit to the Ottawa Jewish Archives, July 18, 2007 that Harold’s older sister remembers a lot of distant lights on the water during their sea voyage to Canada and always maintained it was the Titanic.
