History / Biographical
The Hillel Academy of Ottawa began as the Ottawa Talmud Torah Board in 1910 when the congregations of Ottawa began conceptualizing a centralized institution for Jewish education. It was not until 1945 that the possibility of establishing a day school arose, but by 1949 the Ottawa Hewbrew Day School (later Hillel Academy) was established. The aim of Hillel Academy was to integrate Judaism with the Canadian way of life whole providing students with a well rounded education. Although no student was turned away from the school, I.Q testing was, for a period, administered to all applicants. The Ottawa Talmud Torah Board was officially changed to Hillel Academy of Ottawa, effective March 17 2013, and is now located at 31 Nadolny Sachs Private, Ottawa. Hillel Academy continues to be dedicated “to the world of learning and Jewish tradition”. It is the largest educational beneficiary of the Ottawa United Jewish Appeal. Classes are provided for kindergarten to Grade 8 students. Programs are offered in English, French and Hebrew.
Notes
1. At some point Hillel Academy was renamed as the Ottawa Jewish Community School - unsure of when this happened. This fond needs the following updates: box lists, history/bio. (Note made by Archivist, 2015).
