- Hy Soloway was born in the Ukraine, son of Annie and Louis Soloway. The Soloways arrived in Ottawa around 1923 to join an older brother, Harry, who had settled here previously. Hy graduated with an arts degree from Queen’s University in 1936 and a law degree from Osgoode Hall Law School, Toronto in 1939. He married Ruth Speevak (b. 1915). Hy and Ruth Soloway had a son, Lawrence (b. August 6, 1950). After service in World War II, he established a successful law firm in Ottawa. His first partner was John Mirsky, followed by labour lawyer, Maurice Wright. Mr Soloway felt “very deeply Jewish” and contributed continuously to Ottawa’s Jewish community. He served as President of the Jewish Community Centre of Ottawa from 1961-1974, the Jewish Community Council of Ottawa and the Beth Shalom Synagogue. During the amalgamation negotiations that formed Beth Shalom, Hy Soloway was the president of Agudath Achim and representative to the Amalgamation Committee. In 1998, the Soloway Jewish Community Centre at 21 Nadolny Sachs Private, Ottawa was named in his honour.

- 1. This video was put together by Geoff Poapst for Hy Soloway's 90th but he became ill before the party and it was never shown in that manner. Poapst used several photographs from the Ottawa Jewish Archives for the video. Also Barry Fishman looked at it for material for his article in the Ottawa Jewish Bulletin. 2. Located in File Cabinet
