- History / Biographical
- Hyman Edelstein (b. September 9, 1889 - d. December 1957) was born in Dublin, Ireland to Abraham and Jane (Moisel) Edelstein. His father made a living framing photographs. His mother's maiden name can be found several times throughout James Joyce's Ulysses, it is believed that her father Nisan was the original grocer from the Calypso episode. Hyman excelled academically and in 1908 was admitted as a scholarship student to Trinity College. He did not finish his degree due to an acute nervous disorder. He immigrated to Ottawa in 1912 and married Elsie Hornstein in 1914. The couple had two sons, Nat and Ray. Hyman and his family moved to Montreal where he edited a number of newspapers. From 1914 -1917 he edited the Canadian Jewish Times and its successor, the Canadian Jewish Chronicle, from 1917-1918. From 1926-1927 he was the editor of the Jewish Herald, the People's Journal in 1928, and the Jewish Standard in 1931. In 1916, his Canadian lyrics and other poems was the first book of verse published in English by a Canadian Jewish poet. Hyman has been described as a poet of spiritual, social, and moral issues. He was active in numerous organizations. He founded the Jewish Literary and Dramatic Society in Ottawa in 1913, and the Jewish People’s Institute in 1923. He was also an officer of the Ottawa branch of the Canadian Author’s Association. During both World Wars he worked as a code breaker and interpreter for the Canadian government. He wrote eleven books of poetry including Spirit of Israel which won an award from the Canadian Jewish Congress in 1950. He also had six other works published including the 1957 English translation of Leon Glazer’s From Moscow to Jerusalem. Hyman Edelstein died of a heart attack in December 1957. At the time of his death he was working on an anthology of writings of Jewish interest by non-Jewish poets and authors.
