History / Biographical
The Israella Singers was established in Ottawa in 1977 by Ella Harris, shlicha to Ottawa from the Dror Habonim movement. The group is dedicated to preserving Jewish folk music and Israeli pop musical in its many and varied forms. The original members included Merida Sachs, (Edith) Edie Landau. Ethel Malek, Miriam Paghis, Ricky Grebler, Yvonne Lithwick and Nicky Eichler. The first major concert of the Israella Singers was held at the Jewish Community Centre, 151 Chapel Street, Ottawa on March 20, 1977. Over the years, the group grew to its present size of 16 singers. Their second director was Shirley Schildkraut, and Shirley R. Steinberg has been the musical director since 1980. The Israella Singers have performed for many organizations within the Ottawa Jewish community as well as the general public. In 1987, Café Sabra was inaugurated as a showcase for their talents and an opportunity for Ottawa citizens to absorb and enjoy Israeli music. Over the years the Singers have amassed a repertoire of over 350 songs, most of them sung in two part harmony.
