- History / Biographical
- Jack Pleet (d. May 11, 2010) was born in Ottawa, the son of Abraham David and Rose Pleet. He was educated in Ottawa and graduated from the High School of Commerce. He enlisted in World War II in 1941. His service was overseas and he was part of the Normandy landings in mid-June, 1944 at Cherbourg. “It was just like the photographs - guns held high above the water level and wading ashore”. He was with the 1st Canadian Army troops and looked after supplies for the army and food, water and shelter for a growing number of prisoners of war. He always worked two to three miles behind the lines. He remembers the Battle of Caen and later the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium. He finished his war service in Holland and was able to visit some interesting cities such as Paris and Copenhagen before returning to Ottawa in 1946. He was decorated with the Oak Leaf medal by King George VI at Buckingham Palace. He received this medal for being Mentioned in Dispatches because of his devotion to duty. His parents received a congratulatory letter dated April 3, 1946 from Samuel Bronfman, President of the Canadian Jewish Congress. Jack Pleet entered the service as a private and worked his way up to Warrant Officer. Initially Jack Pleet entered the wholesale fruit business with his father on George Street in the By Ward market area. Afterwards, he formed his own sanitation company called Sanco. He returned to Ottawa and married Miriam Kahn of Montreal. They had three children, Howard (b. February 25, 1949) (m. Tina), Joel (b. October 21, 1951), and Lawrence (b. November 30, 1958) (m. Joanne).
