History / Biographical
Jean Naemark (Jean Torontow) was active among many groups, including; Young Judea, Girl Guides, Hadassah, National Council of Jewish Women, Beth Shalom Synagogue, Machzeiki Hadas Synagogue, and Sisterhood. She worked in the office of Machzeiki Hadas Synagogue for 25 years. Jean Naemark (Jean Torontow) married Max Naemark on 1949. He had come from Saskatchewan to work for the Department of Labour in the Civil Service. He was a mathematician. She worked in the Bureau of Statistics. They were members of Adath Jeshurun as well as Machzeiki Hadas Synagogue before the Machzeiki Hadas Shul moved to Alta Vista. Jean and Max Naemark were one of the founding families of the Ottawa Modern Jewish School. The other five couples were; Mr. and Mrs. Abraham Palmer, Andy Andras, Maurice Ryant, Phil Cohen, and Sidney Abbey. Max Naemark was active in the United Way Appeal in the Civil Service. He helped to organize the Professional Institute of Canada. Max and Jean Naemark had two children Leonard Naemark and Andrea Naemark. Leonard Naemark married Bea (maiden name unknown). Leonard and Bea Naemark have three children; Michael Naemark, Lisa Naemark, and Steven Naemark. He is a creative director in Radio and the winner of National and International Awards. Andrea Naemark married Stuart (surname unknown). They have three children; Erin, Emily, and Shawn.
