History / Biographical
The Centre commenced as the Community Centre Committee of the Vaad Ha'Ir in 1943 with the purpose "that this committee ask their respective congregations to adopt a resolution that they are in agreement in principle to erect and support a Community Centre which will house a synagogue, Talmud Torah, assembly hall, social and athletic centre". The committee was replaced by the Synagogue and Jewish Community Centre of Ottawa (JCC) in 1945. In 1960, the name changed to the Jewish Community Centre of Ottawa, but is in more recent times referred to as the Chapel Street JCC. A community centre was constructed at 151 Chapel Street and opened in 1951. Beth Shalom synagogue, Talmud Torah and a gymnasium were additions. The centre was built in three stages and was fully completed in 1960. Co-founders of the centre were Alex Betcherman, Simon J. Ritt and Morris Zagerman. Martin K. Levinson, L. Petegorsky, Tom Sachs, Sam Lepofsky, Michael Greenberg and L. S. Greenberg were active committee members. Mr. Bernard Alexandor was the first President from 1949-1961, followed by Hy Soloway from 1961-1974. Dr. Nathan Schecter became the first president within the two year tenure. Hy Hochberg was appointed the first executive director in 1950 and continued until 1976 when the executive staff functions of the centre were separated from the Ottawa Vaad Ha'Ir. Jerry Melman was appointed the first executive director in 1976. The centre's mandate is to provide a meeting place for organizations and to enhance Jewish community life through social, cultural and recreational programming. Previous to the construction of the Chapel Street JCC, events were held in a synagogue social area or the Talmud Torah building located at 171 George Street.

History / Biographical
The Soloway Jewish Community Centre (SJCC) opened September 13, 1998. It is the modern successor to the Jewish Community Centre of Ottawa which was located in downtown Ottawa at 151 Chapel Street. The new SJCC is located in the west end of Ottawa at 21 Nadolny Sachs Private. It was named for Hy Soloway (1913-2004), a noted Ottawa lawyer and distinguished member of the Ottawa Jewish community. The Mission Statement of the SJCC states that it is a “gathering place for Jewish people and organizations. We provide a full spectrum of life enriching programs and services for Jews and non-Jews, members and non-members. As the hub of the community, the SJCC will make things happen. We actively support and facilitate community-wide events and ideals. We collaborate with a range of partners to address the social, cultural, physical and intellectual needs of the community. We are inclusive and transform resources into memorable Jewish experiences for people of all ages.” The SJCC is actually made up of a group of five organizations which include the centre itself; the Jewish Community of Ottawa Summer Camp, the Hapoel Cultural & Recreational Centre of Ottawa, the Vered Israel Cultural Centre and the Early Beginnings Multicultural Day Care Centre. The SJCC is a registered charity and is governed by a Board of Directors consisting of 23 dedicated volunteers. The Board oversees the operation of the centre and develops Policies and Strategic Direction.
