- In 1975 concern was expressed over the availability of social services in the Ottawa Jewish community. A Needs Study was conducted by the Jewish Community Council of Ottawa in 1976 and recommended, among other things, services to the non-institutionalized Jewish elderly and an Information and Referral Service. A one year pilot project, also funded by the Council, provided coordinated services aimed directly at the Jewish population. The Jewish Social Services Agency of Ottawa-Carleton was incorporated on January 9, 1980. In 1990 the agency name was changed to the Jewish Family Services Agency of Ottawa-Carleton (JFS). With amalgamation in 2001, the name changed again to Jewish Family Services of Ottawa. JFS's mission statement is to strengthen Jewish individual, family and communal life, as well as that of the greater Ottawa community. Funding was secured from the various levels of government and as part of the funding agreements, the services were for both Jewish and non-Jewish clients. Over the years, the Agency adapted to the needs of the population it served, adding a mentorship programs for Somali refugees and assistance to Russian immigrants. In partnership with local synagogues, JFS offers Kosher Food Bank distributions bi-monthly and a monthly fruit and vegetable distribution has been added. Shalom Bayit, Jewish Women Against Domestic Abuse was established in 2006.
