History / Biographical
The Krantzberg family origins go back to the Pale of Settlement, a western region of Imperial Russia, with Nahama Goldman who, at age 9, was betrothed to Maisha Nisen Millstone (or Milstein). They were married when she was 15 and the groom was 21. They had two children, a girl named Ba Sheva and a boy named Velvel. Maisha died at age 26 leaving Nahama to raise the two children. Nahama opened a small dry goods store to provide for her family. Several years later, she married Menashe Krantzberg, a widower with two children of his own. Together they had a total of 11 children. They lived in Krasnystaw, a town in what is now eastern Poland, not far from Lublin and Chelm, close to the Ukrainian border. Eventually, Velvel Millstone ran away from his family and landed in Canada. There he changed his name to William Freedman and married a woman named Faigah and together they had 11 children. Ba Sheva Millstone married Gershon Zagerman and they had six children. Ba Sheva arranged for her eldest son, Morris Zagerman, to go to America where he settled in Philadelphia and worked in various local Jewish-owned businesses. His uncle, William Freedman, invited Morris to come visit him in Ottawa. Morris worked for his uncle and while there he met and married Mildred (“Millie”) Sadinsky, who was a bookkeeper in the office. Morris and Millie stayed in Ottawa where he founded a lumberyard and construction company. They raised five children. Four of Morris Zagerman’s siblings remained in Philadelphia. His sister Anne came to Ottawa where she married Millie Sadinsky’s brother, Nate, a widower. Seven of Nahama and Menasche Krantzberg’s 11 children survived infancy; Yalek (Joel), Yankel, Moishe, Yossel (Joseph), Etta (Edith), Giesie and Baruch (Barney). After the First World War William Freedman brought the remaining Krantzberg children and his half-siblings to Canada. Yalek (Joel) Krantzberg married Pearl Milstein and they had two children, Harry and Ester. Tragically Yalek was killed while driving a car at a railway crossing. Pearl was invited to live with family in Mexico. Harry remained in Mexico, while Esther married a man from Ottawa and relocated there, though she frequently travelled back and forth to Mexico. Harry’s descendants still reside in Mexico. Yankel Krantzberg moved to Montreal and married Leah Sherman. They had four children, two boys and two girls. He changed his last name to Krantz. Moishe Krantzberg remained in Ottawa. He married Laika (Leah) Vineberg and they had five children. The three oldest, Israel (Izzie), Morrie and Anna were born in Eastern Europe, while the two youngest, Jacob Emanuel (Jack) and Julius (Julie) were born in Canada. Moishe was a teacher and became the first principal of the Ottawa Talmud Torah. He was also a member of the Chevra Kadisha. Yossel (Joseph) Krantzberg emigrated to what was then Palestine and as far as is known, never married and had no descendants. Etta (Edith) Krantzberg married Pinchas Greenfield (possibly Grunfeld before emigration) who moved to Chelsea in the Boston area before the First World War. He enlisted, leaving her for the duration of the war in Krasnystaw with three children.during which time sister Giesie provided a great deal of help and support. After the war Etta moved to Chelsea and brought her brother Baurch (Barney) with her. Giesie Krantzberg remained in Ottawa. She married Chaim Robin and they had two children, Abraham (“Abe”) and Shirley. Abe later changed his first name to Wayne. Moishe and Laika (Leah) Krantzberg’s children: Israel (Izzie) Krantzberg married his cousin Irene Greenfield, eldest daughter of Etta and Pinchas of Chelsea, Massachusetts. They lived in Ottawa where Izzie was involved in both the wholesale and retail grocery business. They had two daughters: Marcia and Joan. Marcia lives in Ottawa and Joan, in Toronto. Anna married Aaron (Harry) Froimovitch and moved to Montreal where they raised two children, Mona and Mark. Morrie joined the Canadian Air Force in the Second World War and was stationed in Britain. He later married Gertrude (Gerrie) Tannenbaum of Montreal and they had two sons, Eli and Leon. Jacob Emmanuel (Jack) Krantzberg, also joined the air force during the war. He married Evelyn Levy, whom he met while stationed in Vancouver. They had three children: Karla, Sam and Julia. For business reasons, Jack changed his last name to Krane, but he changed it back to Krantzberg not long before he died on January 21, 1984 of prostate cancer. Jack owned and operated a shoe store called Kiddie Kobbler which he opened in 1951. His first location was on Bank Street just south of Laurier and the second was in Carlingwood Shopping Centre. Jack was a smart businessman and was one of the first to recognize that shopping centers were going to be a big part of retail for years to come. From the Ottawa Jewish Bulletin's February 10, 1984 issue, a memorial article on Jack Krantzberg, written by Hy Hochberg - "As soon as he was old enough, he joined the R.C.A.F., trained as a wireless air gunner and graduated among the top five in his class. He was commissioned as an officer, the youngest in his group, and served overseas. When he came home, he was enrolled in a commercial art school for a time and then ran a haberdashery shop in Vancouver where earlier he had married Evelyn and started raising a family. Returning to Ottawa in 1951, he opened the first Kiddie Kobbler store on Bank St. Hard work and ambition paid off. From that modest beginning, he expanded his business to the point where he eventually headed a nationwide franchise operation comprising fifty stores with annual sales of over $20 million." Julius (Julie) married Clair (Cookie) Singerman of Montreal, and they had three children: Mark, Gail and Robert.
