- Born in Krakow, Poland, in 1908, Arthur Lermer was a lecturer and writer who promoted the preservation of Yiddish culture. He was an economics professor and former chairman of the Department of Economics at Sir George Williams University (Concordia), Montreal; member of the Superior Council of Education in Quebec; at Canadian Jewish Congress, former chairman of the National Committee on Yiddish, member of the National Education Committee, and chairman of the Sub-Committee for International Education; former president, Canadian International Centre of Research and Information on Public and Co-operative Economy; former vice president, World Council of Yiddish Culture; former chairman of the Jewish Labor Bund, and member of its World Coordinating Committee in New York. He died in July 2001.
