- History / Biographical
- Moses Loeb (b.1888, Russia - d. Ottawa, 1951) came to Ottawa from Cincinnati, Ohio in 1911. In 1912 he married Rose Cohen (b. 1890 - d. 1963). He then started a candy business which he later developed into a successful wholesale tobacco and confectionary business located on the corner of Mosgrove and Besserer. Moses Loeb was active in the Ottawa Jewish community and it was in the field of Jewish education that Mr. Loeb left an indelible mark serving as Chairman of the Ottawa Talmud Torah Board during two separate terms between 1925-1929 and 1934-1943. Moses and Rose had six sons; Norman, Bertram, Jules, David, Lazarus and Henry. Bertram (Burt) (b. 1916 - d. 2006), Norman and David were principals of M. Loeb Limited, a wholesale grocery business which experienced rapid expansion in the 1950's and early 1960's. Burt became President of the company and brought the Independent Grocers’ Alliance (I.G.A.) to Ottawa in 1950. He also launched Supersol, the first supermarket chain in Israel, which opened its first location in Tel Aviv in 1958. Bertram married Blanche Speiler and they had one daughter, Naomi, born November 27, 1947.
