- History / Biographical
- Louis Mirsky (b. June 7, 1904 - d. November 20, 1982) was born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, the son of Harris and Cayla (Gottdank) Mirskey. He grew up in Glace Bay and moved with his family to Ottawa in the early 1920's where his father's brother, Rev. Jacob Mirsky, lived. While in Ottawa, Harris Mirsky made his living by teaching bar mitzvah boys and also conducting services during the religious holidays. He travelled around Eastern Ontario, primarily Kingston, Cornwall and Belleville. Louis Mirsky served in the Canadian Army during World War II and was posted overseas. He worked on the administrative side of the army as a Storeman. His enlistment was “infamous for trading to obtain hard-to-procure foods. His uncle, Lieutenant commander Mervin Mirsky is rumoured to have extricated his nephew from more than one situation where Louis over-extended his military duties”. He returned to Ottawa after the war and, with Dave Polowin, purchased the Normandie Soda Bar on Elgin Street. It was later renamed The Party Palace. Louis “radiated a special kind of friendship to everyone he encountered and made many, many friends as the genial, jovial, ever-smiling host of this popular deli gathering place”. In the 1960s Party Palace was sold to Ernie Potechin who became the "King of Elgin Street". In 1972, he opened another location in Place de Ville and then a third in Bells Corners the following year. Louis Mirsky remained very involved with the business, often working the front, until his death in 1983. Louis never married. His estate established the Louis Mirsky Memorial Fund for the benefit of Hillel Lodge. Louis Mirsky is the son of Harris and Cayla Mirsky, therefore the uncle of Deborah Mirsky Cosman. Harris Mirsky and Rev. Jacob Mirsky were brothers.
