History / Biographical
The Maccabean Athletic Association (MAA) was a boys club in Ottawa. They formed around 1935 just at the time of the second Maccabiah Games held in Tel Aviv. “A closely knit bunch of lads,” aged 13 to 15 years, got together regularly in the 1930's. The group soon became closely connected to A.Z.A. (Aleph Zadik Aleph), who targeted the teenaged boys with their cultural, religious, social and athletic activities and was very active in Ottawa. According to Maccabean Arnie Greenberg, “A.Z.A.was a large organization with direction from Montreal”. The Ottawa Maccabeans had an independent streak. Most of their members lived in the Sandy Hill area and added to the club cohesion. These boys met regularly in the old George Street Talmud Torah building and members also took turns having a meeting in their individual homes. A highlight of their activities was fielding a softball team to play in the Jewish Boys Junior Softball League. Phil Swedlove was pitcher, as well as the leader of the Ottawa Maccabeans. Abe Schwartz played catcher and Martin Ginsberg was on first base. Other players included Sonny Torontow, Norman Maser, Gordon Shore, Mannie Shore, Laurence Sugarman and Arnie Greenberg. The games were played on the York Street Public School softball diamond.
Notes
2. Most of the Maccabean information came from conversations with Arnold Greenberg, summer, 2007. 3. Maccabeans Harold Glatt, Duke Abelson, Eli Baker, Jack Spevak, Gordon Shore, Laurence Sugarman, Phil Swedlove, Arnold Greenberg, William Kahansky and Allan Karp have their own separate fonds. Other Maccabeans include: a) William Bloom, b. February 26, 1922, in Montreal, son of Esther and Louie Bloom. When he was 10 they moved to Ottawa and bought a shoe shop in Hull and named it Blooms Shoe Shop. William Bloom attended York Street, Public School. Followed by Lisgar Collegiate where he graduated in 1941. He was a member of the Maccabean Athletic Association. He enlisted in the air force in 1941 as Aircraftman l because most of his friends were. He was wounded in the head by a propeller at Centralia, Ontario. He survived, but suffered seizures. Dr. Wilder Penfield’s operating skills, Montreal Institute of Neurology, gave William Bloom a healthy and long life. He now resides at Hillel Lodge. b) Lawrence Progosh (b. 1923) joined the Royal Canadian Air Force out of Technical High School in 1939. Because he did not have a high enough level of education, he worked as an aircraft rigger with ground crew. It was not until 1943 that he was able to train for air crew and trained in Tiger Moth planes and Harvard Trainers. Only flew missions over Europe once or twice. After the war he went out to Swift Current, Saskatchewan and apprenticed as an electrician. He returned to Ottawa and operated Lorne Electric. In 1972 he immigrated to Florida. Now, in 2007 he sails his boat along the eastern seaboard, putting in at Hilton Head during hurricane season, and Key Largo the remainder of the year. He lives in Hollywood, Flordia about 60 miles from Key Largo in the Florida Keys. (I, Dawn Logan spoke to him on October 9, 2007, and he said the temperature was about 85 degrees. He sounded very jovial but could remember nothing about being a member of the Maccabean Athletic Association, even though I read him all the names from the Evening Citizen, Ottawa, August 2, 1941). No photograph received from Lawrence Progosh. c) Mannie Shore (1921-1985), brother of Gordon Shore, worked at a desk job during World War II in London. d) Pilot Officer Albert Abraham Schwartz, born 1920, son of Mr. & Mrs. Abel Schwartz. At the time of his death, he was an instructor at the Uplands R.C.A.F. Station. Full biographical details in There I was...a collection of reminiscences by members of the Ottawa Jewish Community who served in World War II. e) Cy “Sonny” Torontow military biography in There I was...a collection of reminiscences by members of the Ottawa Jewish Community who served in World War II. f) Norman Maser (1918-1991) was one of seven brothers who enlisted in World War II.
