Charter Membership Certificate - Blue, B&W; 31x46cm. - October 27, 1964 - Certificate certifies that the Men's Zionist Society of Ottawa is an affiliated society of the Zionist Organization of Canada (stored in oversized materials box). Ballot - 1965 - 1 page A nominating ballot for executive positions within the society. Reports, Educational - 1965 - 1 file Contains four educational reports of interest to the society. Some reports are dated. Constitution of the Men's Zionist Association of Canada - 196? - 1 file. Discusses the purposes of the association as well as rituals and tips on how to conduct executive meetings. Committees - 1966 - 1 file Information outlining the various committees and functions of the Men's Zionist Society of Ottawa. A framed calligraphic charter stating the creation of the Men's Zionist Society of Ottawa, a part of the Zionist Men's Association of Canada - November 5, 1961 (see 4-768).

History / Biographical: By the late 1930's, it was recognized that Zionistic activities in Ottawa were primarily undertaken by women, with Hadassah-WIZO in Ottawa ranking amongst the highest in enthusiasm for the work performed. At a meeting in April, 1940, it was decided that the "Ottawa Zionist Society" would reform with its main purpose being to foster an educational program on Zionism and create an "intelligent" Zionist. Mr. Lawrence Freiman was elected President pro tem and at the first general meeting, Mr. Simon J. Ritt was elected President. Membership fees at the time were $2.00, with the public invited to attend informative meetings where solicitation would not take place. The Men's Zionist Society of Ottawa formed prior to 1950. Shortly afterwards, the society became affiliated with two Canadian Zionist movements. These movements were the Zionist Organization of Canada and the Zionist Men's Association of Canada in 1954. Prior to 1954 the President was Mr. Lopofsky. The President from 1954 to 1965 whose name appears in the bulk of the records, was Mr. David Zelikovitz. Mr Gordon Roston served as President from 1965 to 1966. The society met on a regular basis and discussed a variety of topics related to Zionism. It also had guest speakers and movie nights. Delegates were sent to regional and national Zionist conventions. During the 1960's, the society established a Zionist youth chapter of Young Judaea. The society met in various rooms of the Jewish Community Centre on Chapel Street. It also met in the homes of various members.
