History / Biographical
Moe Segal (b. February 2, 1925 - d. July 6, 2016), was born at Quyon, Quebec, to David and Mina Segal. David Segal was a shoemaker and the family moved to Ottawa in 1927. Moe Segal’s education included Wellington Street and Kent Street Public Schools followed by the Ottawa Technical High School where he played football and was the goalie on the hockey team. During the 1942 -1943 season he played for the Chaudiere Bombers. In December 1943, Moe joined the Royal Canadian Navy and was a telegraphist on HMCS Kenora, a mine sweeper in the English Channel. After World War II, he returned to sport. He played the 1946 season for the Ottawa Rough Riders, and the 1947 season with the Ottawa Trojans who in that year won a championship. After a short stint with the Federal Government, Moe worked for Joe Feller's menswear store. In 1961, he opened his own shop in the Sparks Street Mall named Squire Shop. Later he went into commercial real estate and never looked back. Moe married Sandy Schwartz in 1947 and they had two sons, Steve (Likey) and Eric.
