- History / Biographical
- Nathan Greenberg (d. 1983) emigrated to Canada from Russia in 1906 with his grandparents, the Genchers. His father had passed away and his mother remained in Europe. He was sponsored and then adopted by his aunt and uncle, Isaac and Sarah Greenberg, who arranged for Nathan to join them in the Billings Bridge area. It was there that they farmed land adjacent to the Billings Estate. Sarah Greenberg (d. 1984) emigrated to Canada with her parents in 1900. They settled in an outlying township, now part of the City of Ottawa. Upon arrival in Canada, Sarah’s family soon established a market garden and mixed farming in Gloucester Township. A few years later, Sarah’s parents decided to move west and settled in Los Angeles. Sarah Greenberg returned to Canada a few years later to attend the wedding of Sarah and Jack Pollock. It was at the wedding that she met Nathan Greenberg. Shortly thereafter, Nathan and Sarah were married and settled in Billings Bridge where Nathan established a market garden of his own. With Sarah at his side, Nathan soon became known throughout the area for the quality of his produce. When it was no longer possible for Nathan to continue in gardening, he remained in the food business with wholesalers in the area. Nathan Greenberg was the last Jewish farmer to leave Billings Bridge. Nathan and Sarah Greenberg were lifelong members of Beth Shalom Synagogue on Rideau Street. Nathan sang in the choir and assisted in the preparation of the after-service breakfasts and coffee. Both were regarded as generous individuals who always had time and money for those less fortunate. Nathan frequently lent his name as a sponsor of several individuals who escaped the Holocaust so that they could gain entry to Canada. Nathan Greenberg passed away in November, 1983 while Sarah survived him until her passing in August 1984. Nathan and Sarah Greenberg had two children - Gertrude Budovitch who resides in Fredericton, New Brunswick and Irving Greenberg of Ottawa.
