History / Biographical
Hadassah-Wizo Organization of Canada is an organization of Canadian women dedicated to the material and moral support of health and social welfare and educational programs in Israel and to the enrichment of Jewish life in Canada. Ottawa Hadassah first began in 1920 under the presidency of Lillian Freiman. It was formed directly from the membership of The Ladies Herzl Society which started in 1910. The chief activity of the members in the early years was the sewing of clothing for hospitalized Jewish children in Palestine. In the early 1990's membership consisted of 17,000 women and 1800 male "Life Associates", located in 43 Canadian cities and communities from coast to coast. As of 1993, there were 16 chapters, with 515 members in all. Throughout the years, membership has been fluid, with some chapters being created and dissolved within a short time span, while certain other chapters, such as the Sinai Chapter, have continued.
