History / Biographical
The Ottawa Hebrew Benefit Society was organized in 1912 and was one of the first Jewish organizations of its type founded in Ottawa. By 1926, it was the largest men's charitable organization in the community. Its members visited the sick, provided for those in distress, and administered a sick benefit fund for members. The Society was incorporated in 1915. Members could apply to receive sick benefits. Doctors were under contract by the Society and included Dr. Nathan Schecter, 1939-1948, Dr. S. Smolkin, 1949-1952, Dr. Aaron Kastner, 1953, Dr. Morris Resnick, 1954-1959, and Dr. E. B. Nichols, 1962-1967. During World War II, the War Services Fund provided services to enlisted men. The Ontario government absorbed the principle responsibilities of the Society around 1968.
Custodial History
Donated to the archives by Jack Levin in 1972, Max Kaplan in 1984 and Charlotte Slack (Mrs. Moses Slack) in 1991. Lapel pin donated November 29, 1999 by David Kimmel. Further accruals of 50th anniversary photograph, cigarette lighter and constitution and by-laws donated by Lily and Jerry Penso, April, 1999.
