History / Biographical
The Ottawa Hebrew Benevolent Society began as two separate organizations, the Ottawa Ladies Hebrew Benevolent Society and the Ottawa Mens Hebrew Benevolent Society. The ladies society was founded in 1897 or 1898, with thanks to the "untiring energy of the late Mrs. Aaron Rosenthal (Bertha Rosenthal). It was the first Jewish Charitable organization in Ottawa. The men's society was established in 1900 with the help of Aaron Rosenthal and Moses Bilsky. Reverend Jacob Mirsky also cared for transients in need and helped newcomers to establish themselves in the community. The overall purpose of both societies was to help the poor, indigent and sick Jewish families. The two organizations worked together in their respective fields and merged in 1932 to form the Ottawa Hebrew Benevolent Society. The organization continued to take care of the sick and needy of the Jewish community and provide shelter to immigrants. Helen Abelson joined the Society in 1935 as an Investigator and later as the Executive Secretary. She retired in 1968. In its 1961 Annual Report to the Ottawa Va'ad Hair, the OHBS describes itself as "the Family and Child Welfare Agency of the Jewish Community [which] privides financial assistance, counselling, employment where possible, housing and room registry. During the past year these services were extended to 405 persons." The responsibilities of the Ottawa Hebrew Benevolent Society were assumed by the Jewish Social Service Agency of Ottawa-Carleton when it formed in 1980.
