History / Biographical
The Ottawa Vaad Ha'Ir (or the Vaad as it was popularly known) was established in 1934 with membership from the four congregations of B'nai Jacob (James Street), Agudath Achim (Rideau Street), Adath Jeshurun (King Edward Street) and Machzikei Hadath (Murray Street), along with some of the other organizations in the community. Membership gradually expanded to include standing committees, agencies and institutions and affiliated organizations. “Its purpose is to supervise and assist in the development of the religious, cultural, philanthropic and national life of the Jewish community of Ottawa”. The function of the Vaad was to approve fundraising campaigns, allocate support to the Talmud Torah and run the Vaad Hakashrut The organizational structure of the Vaad Ha'ir consists of an elected president and an appointed executive secretary. Mr. Archibald J. Freiman was the first president and continued in that capacity until his death in 1944. Subsequently, presidents are elected for a two year term. Administration of the Ottawa Vaad Ha'Ir is performed by the executive secretary. The first appointment was Harry Goldman, followed by Joe Ages, Hy Hochberg, Gittel Tatz, Gerry Koffman, Stan Urman and Mitchell Bellman. The president and executive secretary work within the administrative structure of regular meetings of the officers, which was replaced in the late 1970's by a Board of Trustees. Annual meetings are open to the community with reports published in the Ottawa Jewish Bulletin. Originally, the Vaad received its funding from the four congregations and membership fees from participating organizations. With the advent of local campaigns in 1946, the operating budget was obtained from these local campaigns, and since 1952, from the United Jewish Appeal. Since 1973, income is also received from the Ottawa Jewish Community Foundation. Initially, physical office space resided in Mr. Goldman's home. By 1944 the Vaad had an office at the Talmud Torah Building, 171 George Street. By the fall of 1948, the offices relocated to 451 Rideau Street. Offices expanded to the Synagogue and Jewish Community Centre building, 151 Chapel Street, in 1951. In 1998, the officers moved to new premises in the Joseph and Rose Ages Family Building in the west-end of Ottawa. Subject:Alan Abelson Interviewer: Ned Steinman Date: November 7, 2000 Interview Location: Ottawa, ON Length of Time: 1 hour; 31 minutes Alan begins by listing his family genealogy; his father was Jess Abelson, his mother was Molly Grey, his wife is Estelle Levitan (married October 21, 1950), and their children Lynn Julia, Joan Elizabeth, Karen Gale, and Donald Edward. Alan grew up in Sandy Hill in Ottawa and attended Osgoode Street Public School, York Street Public School, and Lisgard Collegiate. From 1948-1950 he attended Carleton University and graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce along with 16 other graduates that year. Following graduation Alan and Estelle moved to Montreal for a year where he worked at a Consultant Firm for 10 months before leaving due to nepotism, he then worked at a service station on Stanley Street for one month. In 1951 he enrolled at Osgoode Hall at the University of Toronto where he studied law until his graduation in May of 1955. In June of 1955 he opened his own law firm with Ben Marcus; he says he felt comfort in the fact that they were both Jewish as many law firms had a “latent anti-semitism”. He recalls being close with Ted Beman (?) and Morris Fife and receiving legal council from them, however he was aware that they did not hire Jewish lawyers. Alan and Ben Marcus worked together for 13 years until Alan wanted to start a new practice on his own; he had a student by the name of George House who asked to come with him. Together they founded Abelson and House which soon added more partners to become Abelson, House, Vice, Hunter, and Thatcher. The firm had a total of 15 employees at it’s height. The firm ended up breaking up when he found out George House was an alcoholic and missed 6 weeks of work; the remaining partners got fed up with House and left the firm. In 1976 Alan opened his own practice with no partners and worked there until his retirement in 1994. He recalls in the early days of Abelson and Marcus they took any client who walked through their doors, he jokes he became an expert on whatever facite of law the clients case was in. He speaks about his time as the past President of The County of Carleton Law Association and how in this association many jewish lawyers had integrated very well. He recalls that during this time it was hard for jewish lawyers to find employment but once they were settled they had no difficulties. Alan’s family is originally from the village of Neinstadt in Kovna (present day Lithuania) and he recalls every Friday supper his cousin Abe would tell him stories from Neinstadt. Alan’s Grandfather Wolf was the first generation to come over; he came over with his four brothers and one sister in 1888 to New York State. Wolf’s sister moved to Chicago while the brothers; Meyer, Joe, Simon, and Wolf settled in New York State. Alan recalls his grandfather being a peddler when he met his grandmother Julia Rosenblum (who was from Toronto) and the two were married around 1890 after moving to Cleveland together. They had 7 children together; four girls, Birdy, Sarah, Helen, and Ada and three boys, Jess, Sidney, and Nate. In 1900 the family moved to Ottawa as close friends the Billsky’s (?) who were from the same hometown in Neinstadt encouraged them to move. Alan recalls his grandfather being a chauffeur and close friend of the Billsky and Friedmans; accrediting that relationship as what brought them to Ottawa. Jess Abelson went to Waller Street Public School until grade 6 or 7 when he left school to work. Alan recalls his father joined the YMCA when he was 10 years old (and was a lifetime member) and was an avid athlete for most of his life. Alan pulls out an Ottawa Jewish Bulletin dated from December 12, 1986 in which it details his fathers Sports Hall of Fame induction and calls Jess Abelson the founding father of jewish sport in Ottawa. Jess Abelson was a flying wing for the Ottawa Rough Riders, a paddling champion of Canada, and a starting guard in the Canadian Basketball Championships. Alan clearly admires his father alot and considers him to have broken down all the barriers for jewish people in sports. Jess Abelson also owned a men's clothing store on Sparks street and was a very well known man in the city; he liked to say his father was “as well known as Kleenex” in the city. Alan recalls whenever they walked down the street everyone they passed would wave and say hi to his father. His father also founded the 39th Boy Scout Troop in Ottawa which was the first Jewish Boy Scout Troop, making his father the first jewish Scout Master. Alan recalls as a child growing up in a large house in Sandy Hill where the basement was so full of his father’s sports trophies they often used them as goalposts to play soccer with. Jess Abelson had an older brother named Lawrence Balfour who they all called Duke; his father had been such a fan of the Balfour Declaration he had named his first son after it. Duke enlisted in the Royal Canadian AirForce on his 18th birthday. He graduated top of his class as a Navigator in Manitoba where he then worked as an instructor for a year before being shipped out for duty. Duke flew 3 or 4 trips over France and Germany shooting trains. After this he received a new Pilot from the Operational Training Unit (OTU); they crashed during a training flight and Duke passed away on November 15th 1943. The family decided to bury him in Chester, England where Alan has visited his grave site a dozen times in his life. Alan’s other siblings are Sylvia Gellman who lives in Ottawa, Stanley Gerome who became a psychiatrist in Ottawa then retired in 1973 and moved to Isreal to be a farmer, and his younger brother (3 years younger) Bobby who works in insurance in Ottawa. When recalling the war years in Ottawa Alan speaks mostly of the Tel Aviv Tennis Club. His father, Jess, had founded the club in the 1930’s as the four existing tennis clubs did not allow jewish members. Alan recalls his time as a groundman for the 8 tennis courts while in University. He sees this tennis club as the jewish social scene during the years it was open as over 200 jewish marriages resulted from the club, including his own marriage to Estelle. Alan speaks of one of his proudest moments at the club being when the Canadian Junior Tennis Championship was in Ottawa and asked to use their courts for overflow games; Alan was very proud when many of the athletes said they preferred the Tel Aviv courts over the courts at the Rideau Tennis Club. Alan recalls that his family never had any money as none of the established jewish families in Ottawa helped out his father with the Tennis Club; instead he says his father used to get donations from jewish merchants along Sparks Street. Alan pulls out many photos he has from the Tel Aviv Tennis Club and while looking at them recalls the Sunday Night Socials with music, dancing, and drinks where he says it was the number one place to be for young jewish people in Ottawa. He also recalls his father fighting with the board of directors as his father wanted the name of the club to be recognizably jewish and the other members wanted it to be a name based on location instead; his father won that fight. He also recalls how much his father cared for the club and it’s members, he offered memberships for $13 for males and $12 for women. In addition he would supply free tennis racquets and balls to anyone who could not afford their own. The Tel Aviv Tennis Club closed in 1954 as Alan says they lost all their membership when Golf became the new social scene after the war. When asked about his experience living in Ottawa during the war years he recalls all the rations books, and the saving certificates that all the children used to save up quarters until they could buy a $5 war bond. In addition he remembers going to the Talmud Torah for his pre Bar Mitzvah lessons, as well as being a member of the 39th Boy Scout Troop. During this time he had to get service points so he would ride his bike around Ottawa during blackouts to get his Military Service Points. When the war ended he was in grade 11 at Lisgar Collegiate, he recalls everyone celebrating the end of the war except for his family as they were still grieving the loss of his brother Duke. During this time the family created the Flying Officer Duke Abelson Memorial Trophy which was awarded to a high school basketball athlete in Ottawa who showed sportsmanship and agility. Three years after its creation Alan won the award. Alan then moves onto the 1950’s in Ottawa, he recalls the boom in industry and has fond memories of being a respected lawyer in the city. During the 1950’s he was the first in his family to graduate with a professional degree, followed by his brother Stan being the first graduate of the University of Ottawa's Medical School. He touches on the “bread and butter” of his first practice as being insurance law, which accounted for 80% of his work. However, he speaks to how he originally gained clients outside of insurance law by going “ambulance chasing”. He would walk around the hospital looking for vehicular negligence cases he could win so that he could work on contingencies. He has very fond memories of these cases as they got him approximately 10 supreme court cases. After 15 years of representing an insurance firm in Ottawa they relocated to Toronto and got picked up by a larger law firm; this meant Alan lost 80% of his business. This was when he started to move to commercial law and began working his way up through law associations. Alan became involved with the Carleton Alumni Association and worked his way up to President of National Alumni in 1958. He also became president of the men's club in his Shul, Agudath Israel, when his children were young. His first apartment in Ottawa was 235 Charlotte Avenue beside the Russian Embassy. He remembers this apartment vividly as himself and Estelle lived there when the Russian Embassy burned down in 1956. He recalls seeing RCMP officers dressed as firemen as they tried to enter the Soviet Embassy. He then moved his family to the west end of Ottawa and bought a newly built house on Golden Avenue. He has very fond memories of raising his children in this neighbourhood as he would build a hockey rink for them every winter and would buy hundreds of dollars of firecrackers for May 24th every year. Alan then speaks of his childhood in the church, since he grew up in Sandy Hill his family attended the Adath Jeshurun Synagogue on King Edward Street. His grandfather Wolf was deeply religious and was the Vice President for 25 years, he was so respected he had the honor of closing the curtain at Neilah each year. (?) Alan recalls his father Jess supporting his grandfather in Ottawa. He gave Wolf his store on Bank street when Jess opened a new store on Sparks Street. His grandfather Wolf was also a founder of the first Jewish Cemetary on Bank street and was on the cemetery council until his death in 1938. Jess then took over his fathers responsibilities in the church until in the 1950’s when the joining of churches happened to form the Congregation Beth Shalom. During this time his father Jess was passed over for a trustee position due to the families lack of wealth and his fathers relationship with the church was not as good anymore. His father then created the Breakfirst Breakfast Club (?). Alan and Estelle raised all of their children in Agudath Israel where all of their children were married, except for Lynn who was married in Israel. Alan details his trip to drop off Lynn in Israel when she was 18, they left one day after the outbreak of the Yom Kippur war in 1973 as they assumed the war would be short lived like the 6 Day War. Shortly after dropping off Lynn she called and asked to be picked up as all of the men had left for war. Alan recalls finding a car, picking her up, and driving to the Don Charmel Hotel just days after Syrian Jets had attacked the city. During this time he touches on how extreme the anti-semiticism was on the Arab side of the war. He finishes by touching on where his children are now; Lynn met a husband in Israel and has 2 children, one of which served in the army and is now in Law School and the other graduated from the University of Toronto and now lives in Beverly Hills. Karen is married with three children in Montreal. And Donald is a political science professor at Western University, he has a wife and a new baby.
