History / Biographical
Wall of Honours Artworks were created and designed by artist Yehouda Chaki. Wall of Honours Artworks were installed in the lobby of the Soloway Jewish Community Centre and was dedicated on November 10, 1999. The stained glass Wall of Honour Artwork is entitled “Jacob’s Ladder” and was commissioned and realized by artist Yehouda Chaki (concept and design) and his crew Lyse Charland Favrette (stained glass technician), Wendell Hyde (project manager), Israel Charney (honor roll design and typography), and Sefi Amir (assistant and project coordinator). Upon the completion of its installation in the lobby of the Soloway Jewish Community Centre the artwork was dedicated on November 10, 1999. Additionally, in the archive we have a scrapbook assembled by Chaki chronicling his artistic process from early design stages, the installation process, through to the dedication ceremony. The following information is from the Wall of Honor Dedication Ceremony booklet: About the Artist Yehouda Chaki was born in Greece and lived in Israel from the age of 7 to 24. A precocious artist by the age of 12, he studied classical painting, drawing, printmaking and sculpture. Following compulsory army service, Chaki completed a four year program at the Avni Academy in just 2 years, studying under some of Israel’s leading printers of the day. He continued his education at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris and now lives in Montreal. Chaki has exhibited in 100 solo shows and over 200 group exhibitions all over the world. His works can be found in over 50 public and corporate collections including the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Jerusalem City Hall, the Philadelphia Museum, the Museo de Arte Moderna in Rio de Janeiro, and the Musee d’Art Juif in Paris. The Wall of Honour Colour, movement, and optimism dominate the large stained glass collage of Yehouda Chaki’s Wall of Honor installation. The artist was commissioned by the Jewish Community to create a design that would hold the names of donors who made the Community Campus a reality. Chaki employed an epoxy technique using antique glass collaged onto a large transparent sheet of laminated, half inch thick glass. The collage technique creates a visual lightness and allows a continuous play of colour across the entire piece. Below the collage of stained glass, the artist painted Hebrew letters on wood in shades of grey, superimposing on plexiglass the names of donors to the Community Capital Campaign in white. The result is a united whole. It speaks of a vibrant Jewish community dedicated to its members, its culture, and the arts. –Rose Ann Hoffenberg. An interpretation of Jacob’s Ladder Kabbalists, mystics, and saints have long sought to reach the perfection of heaven. Their vain efforts to reach heaven by ascending through degrees of self-denial and renunciation, as if mounting the rungs of a ladder hovering in the air, brought them only the hopelessness of futility. They failed because they wished to free themselves of that they had perceived to be the materialism of the earth. Not so with Jacob’s dream ladder! His truth is fully and eloquently conveyed through the metaphor of the ladder of his dream. Humanity, he asserts, can aspire and indeed climb ever upward on the ladder of progress, advancement, and even perfectibility, so long as the ladder remains “earth bound.” Jacob’s Ladder is not a piece off nautical equipment but the hopeful symbol of higher aspirations reachable, step by step, from and on earth. In the quest for the higher and better, humanity must not seek to leave or abandon earth, its ‘abode’. The ladder must remain solidly bound to the earth upon which it stands and humanity lives. Those who wish to mount up on it must, like the angels Jacob saw in his dream, ascend but also and always descend on it back to the earth whereon it stands. Thus does the ladder become the connecting link, forming a synthesis of the upper and nether worlds where humanity is fated to dwell until the end of time. –Philip Katz
